New RV, new to towing a vehicle

We bought what is probably the last remaining “new” 2013 Sunseeker 2900 and will pick up next weekend (woo-hoo!). Because it is 500 miles from home, we plan to tow our SUV on the way back.

We have an Excali-bar II tow bar & safety chains, a Brake Buddy with breakaway in place, and have wired the SUV's brake lights to a front-mounted connector that will hopefully play well with the 2900 (using a 7-pin cable with plans later to concoct a circuit to charge the toad battery). The 2007 GMC Envoy steering wheel apparently doesn't lock and being 4 wheel drive, we can flat tow it.

Does the RV have a 7-pin male connector?

The coffeemaker & pillows are packed... what else do we need? Are we overlooking anything?

Steve & Debbie

You might check to see if there is a break in period on the Sunseeker before towing. Usually manufactures recommend driving a vehicle for a set number of miles before hooking anything up.

JT, thank you, had not thought about that. We're hoping the trip from northern Indiana to the dealership in Iowa would be adequate. We had better read the manual!

It burns gasoline and has almost 500 miles on it.

Sunseekers have a 7 pin connector.

Are you sure you can tow that SUV with 4 down?

Yes, of this we are reasonably certain. It is 4WD with a switch to put the transfer case in neutral, and the owner's manual says vehicles so equipped can be towed flat. Thanks for bringing it up. We have not done it but hope to soon!

Are you sure it doesn't? My 2007 Avalanche has a dial for selecting 2wd/4wd/4wd low or auto on the dash board. There is an UNMARKED position to disconnect the drive train. The setting is far right. With key in on position, Turn the dial counterclockwise and it will spring back. Drive train will be disconnected until next start of engine (or key on).

Check your owners manual. Also, when starting, a red symbol like a Z appears on dial momentarily. It is otherwise not visible, unless you have disconnected drive train.

If you try this, remember that disconnecting drive train will render "Park" useless. Be sure to be on level ground, parking brake on, and foot on brake. Or in the case of towing, connect tow bar to RV before doing this.

Rekwiat, on our GMC, the directions in the owner's manual must be followed carefully (in neutral, engine running, be in 2 wheel drive, turn to N and hold >10 seconds, turn off engine, shift to park, turn key to lock) because the manufacturer doesn't want anyone to accidentally enter that mode. As Bill said, "Park" doesn't hold the vehicle, nor can it drive.

BTW, our first trip, driving the new 2900 home while towing the SUV, was perfectly smooth and thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks to all for sharing helpful info!

Thanks, looked at the directions in my manual. Just need to try it out. Are all gm 4 wd equipped this way or is this a special order feature?

I would not say all GM 4WD are this way, but neither is it a special order. The larger vehicles (pickups, SUVs) have 4 wheel drive that is selectable. Other vehicles have automatic 4 wheel drive that is not selectable--usually called All Wheel Drive. If there is a switch that controls 4 and 2 wheel drive selection, there is likely a position for "neutral".

Not necessarily so. My GMC Sonoma 4 wheel drive has no neutral take off. I installed a driveshaft disconnect for towing.
On the other hand, my Terrain requires no adaptation.
Both require dash fuses be removed.

In the Sonoma there are two. Don't remember, in owners manuel I put white out on ends a just pull them.
In Terrain had disconnect switch installed and just flip switch. Again owners manuel.
They take dash power out when key is on accessory
