Thanks for the info. Don't think I'd get one that you hard wire. I like to be able to use else where.

Baldicon Is the progressive IND a 50 amp? Later RJD

Wow, $270 sounds high. I saw a 30 amp portable one for $89.90 from Progressive Industries. Won't that do the trick for our 2016 3171DS?

The more expensive one is an electrical management system with surge protection. Highly recommended it.

More protection on the EMS-PT30c . I installed the EMS-HW30 under the rear bed. It has a neat remote display with current draw and voltage displays. Cheap insurance that you wont run into a bad power pole

Ben the EMS HW30C is the one you want. As others have said, it does so much more and it has a lifetime warranty. Just wish Forest River would have had them as an option. I got mine from Best RV and Truck Supply for $232.47. Good people to deal with. 888-828-1893

The portable works just as well. Hardwired or portable, the EMS version is the way to go. Wouldn't leave home without it.

We have been PI EMS equipped (hardwired) since 2010 when a surge at a local CG damaged our power converter panel. Our Aliner and TT have had them ever since and saved us from damage twice. It is also nice to be able to monitor power usage in the camper (the Progressive units read out volts, instantaneous amps, and trouble codes).

I was thinking the same thing, but thought I could run the plug (from the MH) through the sewer hole and keep the protector in that compartment and the spare line end through the same hole to the pedestal. Sorry, too late for technical terms!

I would say hardwired or portable, progressive EMS is the only way to go.
I have mine like others have stated. 30amp extention cord from pedistal to EMS, EMS to trailer power cord. I lock my EMS-PT30C to the steps under the awning so I can monitor it from outside where I spend most of my time.

I hardwired my PI EMS under the bed and after the transfer switch. That way it also gives me readings on what the generator is doing when we are being powered by it. Yes, it leaves the transfer switch exposed to surges, but the benefit IMHO of seeing what the generator is putting out is worth it. Mounted the display just under the circuit breaker panel, which is on the front of the bed facia.

Mounted mine under the cabinet behind the breaker/inverter box, and display on side of cabinet just inside the door. That way I can plug in and see if there is a problem before I set up. Also wired in twist lock plugs on the line and load side of the EMS. If I have a problem with the EMS, all I have to do is unplug both sides and plug the incoming line directly to the load going to the breaker/inverter and bypass the EMS.

I have a portable surge protector, the main cord is under the bed and I wired a plug and receptacle into the main cord and plug the surge protector inline that way it easy to transfer to another RV.
