One thing I hate the most...
...while camping, thunderstorms! We just have a line coming through, I didn't plug in the surge protector because we have to share power boxes, and I had no way to lock it up. But I kept hearing thunder a little bit ago and ended up running out in the rain to plug it in. There's a lot of cloud to ground lightening right now, so I made a good choice at 2:15am! LOL

The storm woke me up about an hour and a half ago, not happy. So I sit here surfing the forum and deciding on some possible mods. This storm with most likely cost me some money.

I carry a 30 amp extension cord that I plug into the power source. I run it back to the MH, up into the locking electrical compartment, plug the surge protector into it and run my test. Then I plug the hard wire on the MH into the other end of the surge protector and lock the compartment. It isn't out in the weather, it is always discrete and secure even at sites where it is difficult to lock it at the post.

Sounds like a hassle if it's pouring down rain and 100 degrees out! [emoji6]

Ever since we bought our surge protector, we have never been without it.

Try that in Florida in the summer...no thanks, I'll just trust my surge protector.

We have a hardwired surge protector with remote display in the Sunseeker 3010ds. The remote is mounted on the coach side of the bed - we can monitor it from the coach. Saved all of our electronics several times this past trip when we were hit by waves of lightning storms when the campground lost power two times in one night. We do not have to go outside in dangerous and inclement weather.

We don't have an electrical compartment - the plug goes right into the out side wall of the motorhome. Did they change that on thr 2015 or 16 3170 ds? Would love to be able to lock plug and surge protector out of the weather.

What a great idea! Had we thought of that, we wouldn't have paid extra to have ours hard-wired.

I'd recommend Progressive Industries. I like the hard wired unit, with the remote display. Once it's in, nothing to do but check the display.
I bought mine from Tweetys online. Best deal I could find, & installed myself.

X2 on the hard-wired Progressive Industries. Not only surge protection, but also under/overvoltage protection plus will not power up if there are ground/neutral problems. Also monitors voltage, amperage and frequency.

Used to always lock it to the pedestal, but haven't locked mine up in 3 years now and over 150 campgrounds. I don't think most people even know what it is. Heading out Thursday for a 32 campgrounds trip and probably just jinxed myself.

One thing I love.
I hard wired my 50 amp. surge protecter and it is locked in my compartment knock on would it works. I plug it in on the power pole and it check out the power was wired wrong, the site manager said it was my unit. They check it in the morning and they said that i was right and gave me my money back because i needed 50 amp. and had to use 30 amp. So yes I love my protector.
