Yea. Land uphill loaded with fuel and cargo to stop; takeoff downhill to keep from crashing into the mountain or dropping into the gorge. 3900 foot was what the book said. It did not count the mud holes and washed out sides. Normally the first 500 feet was under water in the rainy season and we had to land over it. Winds were bad too. Severe downdrafts on short final on landing (crunch); and that sucky sinking feeling on takeoff as you cleared the drop off into the gorge.
