Removing water filter

Trying to remove my water filter for winter for the first time, and I'm not able to get it off -- I mean, it won't budge. I don't want to put too much pressure on it and crack it, and I'm not 100% sure I'm even trying to turn it the right way. It sits vertically, so I'm twisting it what would be counter-clockwise.

Any suggestions?

Make sure that you have opened several faucets and removed ALL pressure from the lines. Put a slight upward pressure on the sump as you turn. As you look at it from the side, you should be turning toward the left.

And that's why I love this forum. Bingo, something that hadn't occurred to me -- relieving the pressure by opening faucets. Came right off. Thanks!

Glad you got it loose. Since you have a filter there should be a water filter wrench too. It would look something like this.

Just one!

Unbolt it from the wall, connect the two Pex ends with a 1/2 inch threaded coupler or more Pex and fittings.

It just might save you a headache.

OH! I have had the same problem trying to get my filter cannister off. I didn't even think of opening the faucets and relieving the pressure. I need to change my filter right now. I always have trouble getting that thing off with the filter wrench. Even MEN I have asked have had problems.

I installed a by pass, so I just turn one valve and the water filter is out of the system. It makes it simple to deal with when its time to winterize

To eliminate some problems, you can get a lot of the water out of the canister by turning on your 12 volt pump and opening a faucet , that should almost completely drain the canister. It should come off easier then and help eliminate spilling water.

When I took mine off for the first time I wanted to meet the assemblier. Way too tight.
When you finally get it off, put the canister back on, use a little Vaseline on the oring and threads. Put it on hand tight. Do not over tighten. I keep extra orings handy, just in case. I also leave it off in the winter. If there is any water trapped in the threads, may freeze and crack the canister at the thread. If you need the wrench to tighten, to stop leakage, replace the oring.

The one that came with my new camper is a little different as you really do not need the wrench and then when reinstalling you hand tighten. Something new I guess. Later RJD

I have the same problem. Last time I changed the filter, I got a man to get it off, then I put it on "hand tight" (MY hand). The next time I tried to get it off, IT WAS TIGHT AGAIN!

I'm going to try the "open faucet" trick.

Agree with almost everything you have said except the part about Vaseline on the o-ring, should use silicone grease instead, Vaseline can cause the rubber to swell or breakdown over time.

Removing water filter

Do not use any petroleum product on rubber or Viton o-rings, they will swell and deform over time causing leaks and heartache. Also, Vaseline is not food safe.

Silicon grease is the way to go; You can pick up a tube at Home Depot or local pool supply store.

Seems to be several types of water filters in use on RVs. Looks like the ones with a o-ring seal on the threads tend to break rather easily. Mine looks to be thicker and seals when screwed all the way in. Only time mine broke, I was in hospital, had not drained, got a cold snap and it froze and broke at the threads. Had the heat on low, ran out of propane and DW could not drive RV to get refill.
