Replaced the E450 door speakers today.

Rockford Fosgate Punch P1572 5 x 7-Inches Coaxial Speakers $53 Amazon. This had been on the "to-do" list for a while and wanted to get it done before our trip to Hershey in a few weeks. Sounds better now. Oh, by the way, the AC will surprise you and drench the open driver door just as you start soldering, heh heh. Other than having to hit Bigfoot real quick to divert the water, this is about a 30 min job.

Only 30 minutes. Isn't difficult to remove the door panel and put back on without breaking any clips?

I used some Pioneers, and I would recommend ANY aftermarket speaker over the ones that Ford uses stock.

But I have to ask:

Why did you have to solder? There are short adapters that clip on the speakers that plug into the Ford harness. They're cheap at about six bucks.

See: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...517&mfe=search

Springer, I would like to say "old school" but the truth is... because I forgot to put them in the cart when I checked out... delivered Friday and Saturdays are my only opportunity.. <sigh>

Followed these steps, which I found online. There is also a YouTube.
Pax side >Pop off Black mirror bolt trim triangle... top comes straight out first then slide up
Driver side w mirror controls >this has one screw in it and it comes off
Remove one screw behind these. (Phillips)
Pry out small square cover under door handle. Has a small notch where to pry.
Remove one screw under door handle. (Phillips)
Pop off door handle trim ... front comes out first
Remove one screw behind it. (Phillips)
Pop off round cover at bottom rear of panel
Remove one screw behind it. (Phillips)
Pop off Power Window switch panel ... front comes out first
Remove one screw behind it. (Phillips) (mine did not have this)
No need to disconnect Power Window switch panel
Lift panel straight up and off. No need to pull straight out to unsnap. Just lift.
Let hang from Power Window wiring ...
Remove 4 screws around stock speaker (Torx Or socket) Disconnect speaker wire connector and remove stock speaker
Snip wires just above connector and strip ends
Install wires into new speaker inputs - As mentioned above 6 bucks for the plugs, just don't forget to put them in the cart. Observe polarity - Negative, mine were brown stripe driver and orange stripe pax found on-line)
Re-install (follow steps above bottom to top)
Enjoy!

Wish my hearing was better so I could tell good speakers from crap ones. Even with hearing aids in It all sounds the same. Up side is I'm saving a lot of money on stereo and sound equipment. I did have to buy a sound bar for TT TV, couldn't get enough volume otherwise. Same problem with old MH, put a 3 speaker Bose system it it. Could piss off everyone in a 1/4 mile radius if needed.

Getting wet from the roof

Just let you know I added a 6" clear hose from the water diverter to dump past my doors. Everytime I opened it in the rain, I got water in the window switches. and my next project are the front speakers, so thanks for the info.

I replaced my door speakers this spring with some Kickers.

It's a an improvement over the factory ones but I wouldn't say it's significant. I think they need a new head or amp to really make a difference.

There is just too much road noise in these units.

I might just install the $23 / pair Boss Audio speakers from WalMart - I'm really curious if the sound will be better at that price!!

Boss Audio Audio CH5730 - CHAOS EXTREME 300 Watt 5" x 7" 3-Way, Car Speakers (Pair of Speakers) - Walmart.com

x2. I replaced mine also, but road noise is an issue. I have to crank it up and then the DW squaks. I usually wait 'till I'm stopped.
