Running A/C

New to rving and just took my dogs out for a "test" run to get them comfortable riding in our 3170. Wanted to run the air in the unit for the dogs. Can I not run the air using just the main engine. It would not work. When I got home I ran the generator and I was able to get the a/c to run. Any help out there? Thought I could cool the back of the unit while I was driving. If I'm plugged in to a 30 amp hookup will it run then? Thanks.

To run AC either you need to run generator or hooked to shore power. Main engine will not run RV AC.....

We got a book that explained RV basics from the dealer
It was a quick read and for newbes,
It really helped
We wave been RVing for one year and are still learning
So you know
Your dash board air will not cool the coach, just you and your significant other
Some people will travel with the Generator on and house air and not use dash air at all
Yes the gen uses fuel but my understanding is it uses LESS fuel than you would if running dash air only and the whole coach is cool for passengers and pets.
Get that book ;-)

Run that generator as much as possible! Keeps the a/c going strong and exercises the generator. Don't let it sit to long. I start mine up once a month and let it run for a few hours. Don't forget to add the fuel stabilizer if the unit will be sitting for a while.
