Rusty battery compartment.

The under stair battery compartment in my Sunseeker 3010DS is showings some surface rust on the inside. There are slots cut in the metal on each end that a tied down strap hooks into and I suspect that road water is getting in via these slots. ( I can see water lines on the outside of the batteries.)
I'm going to try expanding foam to seal them up but wondering what other folks do with theirs?
Thanks in advance

There is another vent hole cut in the upper back centre of the compartment. Do I need something to allow cross venting?

Ours was rusty too, scraped clean, opened plugged drain holes and painted with a Rustoleum rust stabilzer ? and then several coats of Restoleum paint. There are better products for stabilizing and preventing rust, but this is what I had access to at the time. Worked well so far 2+ yrs.

Mine was rusty from a battery leaking. I removed and replaced the batteries and used battery trays for them to sit in. Before putting them back-in, I used baking soda to clean the battery box and then painted the inside with "Flex-Seal".

There don't seem to be any drain holes in the compartment and the problem holes are about 1/2 way up on the front and back. I did considered putting a drain in the bottom but thought it would also act as a way in for road water when traveling in wet conditions. Interesting that you already had them.
