Size for storage garage
Hi friends! We are in the process of drawing up plans to build a garage/shop for our 3170DS. The overall height of the motorhome is approaching 11 ft. We are trying to decide between a 12foot door or a 13 foot door. The 13foot door adds quite a bit of expense. We are looking for guidance and suggestions if anyone has experiences that could guide us. Thanks!

Will this be the last coach/ camper you ever own? My opinion has always been to build for bigger, pay once, cry once.
If you build for just this camper you may regret it later. Please don't ask me how I know this

I understand the expense aspect but I say go for the bigger door. That way if you ever decide to move to a Class A - it would fit.

IMO, the door should be 13', if you can afford it, and go as deep as you can.
Why? Because you can never "Make" the door higher, or the garage deeper, if you decide to go bigger later!
I have a friend whose 38' Class A sticks 5' out of his 34' garage, that I remember him saying, "this is as big as we'll ever need"!

Your 3170ds should be around 11'3" in height. My 3010 is the same height. A 12' door should work fine. The opening should be about 11'10 with the door up. I am in the process of drawing up our steel building/condo with the RV in mind. This renting storage space is for the birds.

Check this out. I would go 14 feet high 16 feet wide on the door. and 50feet long by At least 22 wide for the storage. This will get you anything you ever need. http://www.executivestorageestates.com

I'll agree with everyone. I'd go 14' door, 50' long if possible, because it will be far cheaper to do that now vs. remodeling in the future if you upgrade.
But yes, a 12' and 10' longer than the unit in question will be fine for now.

The absolute smallest building we've ever had, was 20 wide, 50 deep, with a 12 wide by 14 tall door. I would never go smaller, as on this one I couldn't get the awning all the way out when parked in there. This building was sold with the house. If you ever decide to go with a fifth wheel or larger class a motorhome, the 14 foot tall door is the minimum, and 12 foot wide in the mirror of a class a looks more like 10. Plan for the future, or at least don't limit yourself. Suppose you get a 40 foot diesel pusher one day with a 13 foot height. Our Tiffin was between 12-13 foot tall. I've seen way too many people regret the size of their buildings as they wouldn't spend that extra few dollars.

11'6" is what sticks in my mind for our 3170DS.
I avoid any low clearances posted at less than 13' high. Our units are 32'+ long... 11'6" is with the rig level front-to-back... Drop the front down an inch, rear goes up!

I have a 3120 which is about 4 inches shorter than the 3170. I built a pole building 14 feet high and 32 by 38 feet. The door for the Sunseeker is 12 by 13 ft high. I also have 2 other doors at the other end 10 by 12 feet high. This allows for my toyhauler which is less than 11 feet high and 24 feet long. I also have room for my tow vehicle and another car. I think 38 feet long is the shortest length to comfortably fit the Sunseeker. I originally speced out the building at 54 feet but the local township said it was too big. No problems with set backs or state permeability requirements but they had a local limit on square foot size based upon lot size. Still not happy about it but at least I could squeeze my toys in which was the primary goal.

As a small part-time contractor I have built 8 or 9 garages for workshops and RV I put 12X12 doors in all of them because I thought that would be tall enough. Never fails I had to go back and raise 3 including mine which I converted to a 13'3 slider right at the truss level. Take the advice go with at least a 13'6" door 14' probably will be cheaper. You can get by with 10' wide but it is tight 12' wide seems good. I have built from 36' wide x 36' wide to a 50x120
