Depends on which one you have. If yours has a little raised area at the bottom of the tab, push down on the raised part and it will release the flapper.

I have a 2007 Forester, bought it used two years ago and did not realize the vent door had little locks on it. I didn't lock it and door was gone when I was checking it out. Took some very fine wire screen and placed it over the vent. It's works great. Vent is always open but the screen keeps bugs out.

I love low tech solutions. Our flapper works just fine but it is not easy to lock/unlock. I use an awning hook to stuff a sponge in place when I depart a campground and use the awning hook to pull it out when we next go to use the stove. Works every time.

Mine has turn buttons, flip them up to unlock vent. Good thing that I did not use the screwdriver tip TOO hard, or I would have broken it.

Once you operate them 5-10 times, they get easy to operate,

I have 2008 Coachmen Concord. My range hood vent has no flapper. I purchased a bug screen, installed, no problems.

Is there any problem with water entry through the screen when traveling at highway speeds?

After reading this thread I decided to check the operation of the vent flapper on my new RV. Surprise...it's already broken. The movable door was hanging funny and when I released the holding tabs it just fell off. Really cheap plastic stuff.

Going to Lowes when they open tomorrow and get a couple of metal hinges and make an attempt at fixing it.
