Ours had some caulking holding it closed......Finally got it open......Now I leave it unlocked all the time......I take apiece of pool tube sponge and jam it up underneath the cover to keep it closed in transit...works!!!!!!!!!!! J

Changed mine to steel "mini" hinges today. Easy job and works better. Will be on the lookout for a new one anyway because I was able to use a pocket knife to trim a little plastic to make the hinges fit flatter. That's really cheap plastic.

The SAM-1 has an internal slide door so you can just remove the original junk flapper.

Do all Sunseekers have flappers or just certain models?

That's what I did with mine. Hardest part was holding up the vent to remove and replace the screws that hold the vent. Not hard to drill out spot welds. Main thing is keep a picture or drawing of wiring before removal.

My first one did not. It was a 1965 Apache that was all canvas. It was a true "folding camper".

I bought and installed the SAM-1 fan and light. I think it's great. HOWEVER, I do not like the exterior outlet, nor its gasket. I left my OEM outlet and flapper on for now.

A driving rain can enter the SAM outlet grille. Maybe it will never happen to you or me, but it could. The gasket is a foam material that I've seen disintegrate in outdoor applications. I don't know what kind of foam it is, but I know I would not trust it. Why they didn't provide butyl tape, who knows. I think they mean well, but I don't want to be a water intrusion test dummy for them. I can't figure out why they didn't use a downward opening outlet like have been on RVs for decades.

My hope is to take the flapper on my OEM unit, and cut out the middle of it and affix screening, much like the SAM one. Then it can stay latched.

Edit: going back to the earlier posts, it looks like most of you SAM users kept the OEM outlet too.

Had no idea mine had a flapper till I went outside on the drivers side and saw it. I thought the range hood fan worked liked the one in our house, no outside vent. Now that I found it, how do you open it? Do you have to go outside and unlock it somehow every time you use your stove ? Thx, Ben

Seems we can't win, your flapper is locked shut and my is always open....stove vent flapper!!! And, on top of it, the darn thing is 9 feet up.
