As long as the awning hasnt been lowered in the extended position its fine to lock the knob.
If its tightened in the retracted position itll extend and retract fine.
In other words as long as arm is extended "all the way out or up" the knob can be tightened and stay tight.
Once you lower awning or tilt it for rain tilt and tighten knob you cannot retract it whithout loosening knob and extending arm.

Clear as mud?

Noise update

I removed almost everything from the RV that I had put in over time. I filled the FW tank. Then took a ride. I was able to identify a couple more noise makers and took care of them. One was a step stool that I thought was held tight by some foam but over time the foam compressed where it was tou hing the stool.

Today I put most of the stuff back in the RV storage compartments and refrigerator, etc. but in a different arrangement. I think I got lucky.

Took an 85 mile trip over familiar roads and it was a pleasure again. Very little noise and quite smooth most of the time. It must have sensed that we were looking at other RVs.
