Tires on Sunseeker

Can anyone tell me what type and make of tires are supplied as original equipment on Sunseeker? I've seen a lot of posts here mostly from owners of travel trailers regarding the load rating and lack of quality on their tires. Planning on a purchase of Sunseeker MH and am concerned if the tires we end up with are less than a good quality. Also, what mileage can you expect with them on a 31' MH? Don't want a major expense for tires right away after new MH purchase. Also, does FR offer any options on tires on a new unit?

Mine came with Michelin LTX 16" tires. Balance is perfect.

The tires on a new Sunseeker should not be a problem for either wear or failure, regardless of the brand.

Michelins were originally installed on the Ford year model 2010 chassis of our Sunseeker 3100, which was built August, 2010 as a 2011 model. Luckily for me those tires were recalled by Michelin about two years ago and I got a full set of 7, including the spare, new at no cost. They had about 24,000 miles on them and had enough thread to go at least that many more miles. One of the regular posters on this forum has a tire shop and he said an industry newsletter stated about 300 of the tires lost threads. That's out of a total of over 1 million. To me that says they were quite unlikely to give a problem on any one vehicle.

Of course, Michelin corrected the problem, so I don’t worry about the replacements.

My 2012 2400 on Chevy 4500 has Uniroyal Lorados. I've got over 30K on them and only slight uneven wear on front - realignment should help them last another 15-20K

There's no guarantee that your chassis will have Michelins.


You could make it part of the deal that if it doesn't have Michelins, but another new one on the lot has them, have the dealer swap them before you close the deal. It wouldn't cost the dealer much and you'd just be letting someone else drive on the other brand.

Mine came with Michelin LTX 16" tires as well. You want to make sure they are "E" rated tires

Same experance as RamblerGuy for our 2011 3170DS, except we DID have a tread separation and blowout while passing slower traffic on I-10 in Texas traveling 70mph.

This was during our Christmas travels of 12/13. Michelin had just issued the recall 2 weeks earlier and letters hadn't even made it out to owners yet. I was one of the first to get 6 new tires at zero cost to me. We were at around 26,000 miles when we had the blowout and all 6 tires where replaced. By my estimates the current tires were at about 50% of their life.

Michelin did us well and I have no complaints. The RV industry suggests replacing your tires every 5-7 years regardless of miles. Unless you are a full timer, you'll replace due to age before mileage.

Also, let me add that I remember our tires being dated 2009, as the Ford cab was built in early 2010, then Forest River finished it mid 2010 as a 2011 year model. So, our tires where already over 4 years old and 26,000 miles so Michelin made it more than right per my view.

My spare is a Uniroyal and so wasn't part of Michelin's recall. This is common to have a different brand spare. I don't believe Ford ships them to Forest River with the spare as my spares date code closer resembles the build date of my coach.

Ford does not ship rolling chassis with a spare unless ordered with them.
The Uniroyal is cheaper. (go figure)

My spare was a Michelin but had a different date code from the tires on the ground. Was still in the recall range. Oddly it was either used or had a flat during the 800 mile delivery to our dealer. It had gravel in the grooves and the new tire nibs were worn off. Didn't matter in the end. I got 7 new tires. I expect I will never have to buy a set for this motorhome.

Mine are Michelin 16" 10 ply on new sunseeker 3050s 2015 they are not the same thing that comes on fifth wheels and travel trailers have had both and my share of blowouts with China bombs most what you will see on 5er and travel trailers had 4 blowouts with mastertrac tires had to change all to Goodyear g614 lucky I had heavy duty rims to hold the 110 psi that's needed good tire come on these class c's haven't heard of the problems that can come with other rv's

Michelins came on mine originally but were replaced on the recall. Since Michelins were not available I went with BFGoodrich ( made by Michelin) I like the Goodrich tires due to better ride, look better, and for some reason they seem to maintain more constant tire pressures.

Just wanted to chime in here and let new forum members know that we just purchased a used 2011 Sunseeker 3170ds from a private seller in February, found out about the Michelin recall by reading these forum posts and called Michelin with the DOT numbers and they replaced the tires at no cost. So even if you are not the original owner it might be worth checking into.
