Wanted, a GOOD GPS!
I don't know how long it takes to get a question published but I've waited a while. I have a Rand McNally tripmaker. I think it is junk. Anyone got a better one to recommend?

The gps on my iPhone took me on some back roads pulling the xlr. Not impressed when I came up on a horse and buggy. On another boondock adventure I got on a "lane and a half" road. I think tom tom makes a rv specific gps.

Garmin 760RV LMT is pretty good. Keep in mind every GPS has it faults but you can at least program this one for height, Wright and length of rv. You have a choice of rv mode and car mode. It hasn't touted me too weird yet but it has had trouble finding a couple campgrounds. I always run the Garmin GPS plus the wake app on my phone to help keep us straight.

+1 On the Garmin 760RV LMT. But even with it I keep a current truck atlas handy...

I now have a Garmin 760 RV. While I like it, I use it in the auto mode most of the time - otherwise it gives "truck" speed limits (here in California those apply to "three axles or more" - our class C is two axles) and sometimes picks rather strange routes, likely to avoid "obstacles" I have no problem with.
I previously had a Garmin Nuvi 1450 LMT (now obsolete) in the Motorhome which I moved to one of our cars when I got the 760. Like the Nuvi. I think it's 5 inch display is somewhat brighter than the 760's 7 inch display.
If you don't need the size/obstruction clearance functions, the specialized RV routing, or the RV database functions (e.g., nearby campgrounds), a Nuvi with lifetime maps and traffic can be had for a lot less money.
Also occasionally (rarely) find the location of some campgrounds in the 760 data is in error - use an iPad app to cross-check.

Me too on the Garmin Rv model
The cell phone apps, all of them will be of no help when you need it most such as in fairly wild areas north of the Great Lakes.
A real RV gps is the only guarantee

GPS
My 2011 F-150 didn't come with a GPS. I ended up with a Magellan. It has served me well for 6 years. If you buy a free standing unit, I suggest either a Garmin or a Magellan. It should have lifetime upgrades included, and, in my opinion, shouldn't cost over $250. Mine was $149. Then I bought a "bean bag" mount that sits on the dash. That's it. You upgrade periodically by plugging into a PC.

i have garmin nuvi 67??. it works great. cell phone gps is worthless if you lose signal just when you need to turn. cell phone service is very sparse in the mid west (utah etc). Satellite gps gives you accurate speed, posted speed limits, trip planner, etc.

in addition, make a smooth platform to mount the suction cup..windows will not work. you will have to pick it up off the floor. If you have an extra mount, you might consider screw or other means to a place well with in reach. you will be glad you did.

On another forum a member started a poll on favorite GPSs earlier this year. Current results:
Garmin 53
Magellan 1
Rand-McNally 5
TomTom 1
One person said they used Google Maps - must be a pad or cell phone. No other mentions of other phone based apps. For the Garmins, seemed like a split between the two RV models available - 760 and 770 with some using others. Many were not totally happy with their units - any of them can generate questionable routes or have other "features" they don't like. Several stated they use the GPS but double check on another tool.

I use SYGIC Truck and Caravan app on my pad and built in Android radio. It is stand alone (no wifi needed), provides routing that takes weight, height and other factors into account and has been exceptionally reliable for me. Never wound up on a dead end road or a lakeside.
Another stand alone App I have seen is Basersoft. I've used it on other peoples vehicles and find it quite friendly. But that is all I know about that one.

Please give a reference for the truck atlas (never heard of such a thing). I have the Garmin 770LMT. It failed spectacularly finding the KOA campground near West Chester Pennsylvania (put me in an endless loop). I had to call home and utter the dreaded words "Houston, we have a problem". My husband had to start up Google maps (in Ottawa Canada) and talk me there over the phone.

We have used our Garmin Nuvi 2557 for several years. It pays to have planned your route ahead of time because this unit will take you on some interesting rides on occasion. That being said it has been dependable and I like that it gives you the ramp configuration so you know what lane to be in. Helpful when you're 45 feet long. Also works for hunting fast food and Walmarts in strange towns. Most complaints with most GPS's seem to center around the routing. Settings help some, but sometimes they just refuse to take you down some roads.

Just looked at the Garmin website. Current models are the RV779LMT-S and the RV660LMT 7 vs 6 inch displays. One trick I have learned when putting in a campground destination on my Nuvi 1450LMT is to check for longitude and latitude as street address too often take you to offices away from the actual campground. All GPS's have a quirk or two, but just like a good spouse, we are much better with them than without!!!

While I personally use both a Garmin 2598LMT and 2599LMT that have served me well on both an Alaskan trip and a trip to the Canadian maritime provinces, I think it is worth mentioning that Winnebago now includes the Rand McNally RV GPS with a beautiful 10" screen in their motor homes. I carry both because the factory GPS system in our TOAD doesn't include Canada.

We got the Good Sam RV Tripmaker (powered by Rand McNally) when we got our motorhome 5 years ago. Like the ability to use the Good Sam Trip Planner which syncs with the GPS. It is quite large which can be a nuisance for us in a car, but for the motorhome, it was great.
If you have a smaller RV then you may not need the extras such as low clearance and bridge warnings, but with the 40' motorhome, we wanted to be able to use those features.
I would imagine a truckers' GPS would do similar things, but would not have built in campgrounds, recreational sites, and the RVer-targeted functions.
After 5 years, we have had no problems that weren't user-related! lol
