Water heater dual mode

I have a 3050s with Suburban SW6DE water heater. There is only one rocker switch in the cabin. It says water on top and heater on the bottom. Press the rocket down toward water it operates electrical heater operation. Press top the gas comes. The dealer stated if there is an electrical connection it will use gas and electric at the same time. Is that true? Also since there only one switch there is no off if the RV has electricity. There is no switch or selector outside just a reset button.
I keep a electrical connections always. So I don't have an option to turn it off. Seems it's a dilemma. Any ideas on off or real dual fuel.

I think this detailed FAQ link below may help you. Usually the inside switch is just for the propane side of the water heater on the Suburban's. The electric element switch is most times located on the face of the water heater itself, as explained in the link:

Suburban's electric switch and much more

FYI, this is one of the most ill-explained things from dealers during PDI's............. and thus one of the most frequently asked questions here.

You refrigerator can have an auto mode, that will sense whether it's powered by propane, 12 volt, or 120 volt.............but I can not remember ever seeing a Suburban water heater that could do this.
