1st you should have a water pump switch somewhere- turn it OFF. If you are out of water you should also turn off the electric and LP to your Water Heater.
2nd most water pumps are not harmed by running dry but it's best not to do it for too long. I once left mine on for at least a couple hours when the tank was empty and it didn't harm it.
3rd as mentioned you water tank might well be empty. My current rig came from the factory with the water connection on the lower SIDE of the tank! I discovered it would start sucking air while there were still 9 gallons left in the tank! That's nearly 20% capacity that I could not use. I plugged the side outlet with a plastic pipe plug and put a T on the bottom tank drain. I put the water pump suction on the side of the T and a drain valve on the bottom of the T and now I can get all 50 gallons out of the tank using my pump.
Good luck with yours!
