How much is a lot? My unit with 4500 miles has about 3/4".
As for the black flush: after you dump the black tank, hook up a water supply to the flush inlet and flush out the tank for a few minutes or until the water draining is clear. Many people have a clear fitting somewhere on the dump hose to watch. You could use the flusher to breakup any solids in the tank before draining if the tank isn't totally full. You could also flush while draining as well and partially refill and drain the tank using flusher to help clean everything out. Lots of different ways.
It's good to carry a dedicated hose for the flusher and don't use your normal white potable water supply hose to prevent any cross contamination from happening.
Be cognizant of anyone waiting in line to dump while you are flushing. I rarely use a campground without full hookups but on my most recent trip I noticed the campground dump station did not have a hose connection for a flusher. When I inquired they said they used to but there were so many confrontations and fights on Sundays when many people were leaving that they removed them. I was annoyed because this was the last trip this season and I wanted to leave my tanks clean for storage. Fortunately I had the fittings and hoses to McGiver up something and did my flushing early before anyone else got there. Taught me to ask when making a reservation if I ever plan to use a dump station again.
I also installed a flusher on my gray tank.
