If I had the inclination to rent my RV, I would lease it back to a rental business. The rental company manages, insures, cleans, instructs the renters and maintains the RV and takes a cut in the in the rental fees.

Bad idea!!! Years ago I loaned our pop up to a “TRUSTED FRIEND “ only to have a wind storm rip apart the thing. He returned it while we weren’t at home and never heard from him again. Lesson learned, don’t trust your mother!!!

We are borrowing a friends 1992 popup for a trip to Glacier NP and Columbia Icefields. In exchange I am cleaning the furnace, stove, changing the water lines and sanitizing the system, checking the fridge (another story), repairing a small rip in a canvas seam, repacking the wheel bearings and giving it an extensive cleaning though it' is in great shape for a 27yo popup as it's always been stored inside.
I contacted my insurance agent for coverage while using it. After explaining what we were up to he told me to get coverage as soon as we took possession. I got their policy for a minimum of 3 months for $75 and can cancel it for a refund when we return it to the owner.

You’re not borrowing it Sir. You are repairing/rebuilding it and testing as you do.
You are the good friend here!

Over the years, I have bought a boat from my father-in-law. Sold a boat to a brother-in-law. Sold a car to an employee of my family's small business. Lent money to family members, etc, etc. Now I am a graduate of the School of Dumb Ideas and will NEVER do the previously mentioned ever again! Never!

Circa 1969, I borrowed a friend's 1966 Honda 250 Scrambler. I promptly destroyed the delicate 4 speed transmission.
Never loan stuff to friends and family..if you want to remain friends. I've loaned tools over the years, never to be seen again.

I may not be that good of a friend. There are a couple of problems.
1) There is a problem with the surge brakes. The whole system is dried out, not a drop of brake fluid. What I have found is it's going to be fairly expensive to repair. Parts are hard to find.
2) The fridge doesn't work. The freezer part starts cooling then after 1-2 hours it gets hot. Reconditioned cooling unit is $515 + S&H. New fridge is $700 and up. The popup is only worth $700 to $900 according to KBB.
Owner said no way on the fridge. Even though the popup has a GVW of 2440#, it came with surge brakes so they need to be repaired.

Sally Forth
Does anyone besides me read the Sally Forth comic strip? They've just run a series on this same issue--borrowing a motorhome from a neighbor they don't know very well. The hapless husband is sure to bungle this one.
The author interleaves this this thread with others, so as you look backward or go forward, you will see non-RV related strips too.
Today you can see the Friday, June 7 and Saturday June 8 strips here. They are relevant. You can search the archives if you do a free registration.
