Should be instant. IF you're on an iphone app or tablet app try refreshing
the page view or emptying the cache.

No luck. I uploaded an image that fit the specified criteria using my laptop, it shows as my profile pic on the user cp but not any of my posts.

You upload two different pics. One is your profile pic, which you see on your page. The other is your avatar, which you see on your posts. Both are done from the User Control Panel (User CP) but not in the same place.
Edit: Ok, just double checked. It's under Settings & Options: Edit Avatar
