Banana hammock failure...

I bought a banana hammock and couldn't get it up.

Really.

At the Atlanta RV Show I bought a "Fruit and Veggie Hammock" for our 5th wheel. Sweet Wife likes to take her "Magic Bullet" juicer machine along and takes an ample supply of all sorts of veggies and stuff to run through the thing. Including bananas. All of which take up space on the counter.

And here is the epic fail: The hammock mounts with two fairly substantial screw hooks that are to be screwed into the bottom of cabinetry. This works great in a house where the bottom of the cabinet is 1/2" real wood. In my trailer the bottom of the cabinet is a thin veneer. The veneer creates a space for the wiring for lights and such that attach under the cabinet, on the inside is a real wood bottom, but the outside is a thin panel to hide wiring under the cabinet.

In my humble opinion, the veneer is not substantial enough to support the weight of the loaded hammock without the screws pulling out. Therefore there is no suitable place in the trailer to mount the thing.

Nothing wrong with the hammock, just no place to put it.

Are you looking for a solution, or just venting? If you looking for a work around, try this.
Drill the required amount of holes in the thin false bottom veneer, slightly larger than the diameter of the mounting screws. Then, knowing the thickness of the entire bottom (insert probe into false bottom) adding the false compartment to the thickness of the structural cabinet bottom, and subtract at least an 1/8"for error. Install mounting screws (I assume that as your fastners) past the veneer and into the structual bottom of the cabinet.
Oh, and make sure you don't drill through wires in the false bottom. They should be narrow enough to allow the drill bit to slip by.

Try to get some eyebolts with the same opening as the screweyes and mount them through the cabinet with nuts and washers.

More of a product review than anything else. But yeah, I will entertain any creative solution to the problem. Might get it to work after all.

Perhaps a trip to Home Depot will yield some MUCH longer screw hooks and your solution just might work.

Great, just do an accurate total length measurement on the screw hooks, so you don't punch through the bottom of the cabinet. Good luck, and glad to help.

The front face of your cabinets will be solid or vinyl covered particle board framing...lots of meat to anchor to if you don't mind it in that location.
