New at this and was just wondering do you by food an drinks before you leave or when you get there. Just a little worried about stocking the fridge

We always stock up before we leave.

We leave home with a stocked fridge and then resupply as needed wherever we are at.

Many times i have stopped at Wally World along the way. Pretty much everywhere we go we are going to pass one. Depending on timing (when we are leaving, time off work....) we might go the night before so we can get out of work and get to the campground ASAP. I plug my camper in at home so many condiments, drinks and other things stay right in my camper fridge for next time.

Turn fridge on a couple days ahead of the trip then stock it up before you leave and run fridge off propane while you travel to camping spot.

Unless you have a standard residential fridge it is not going to do a good job keeping your food cold if you load it up with warm food and drinks. For best results cool everything at home ( especially drinks) and load them cold into the cold fridge. If you buy warm drinks after setting up and put them in the fridge, it will take a long time to recover.

I pre-cool the fridge with ice and ice packs the night before I turn it on. We buy the items we are taking before hand and cool them, if needed, prior to filling the fridge. The morning before we are to head out I turn it on with electric. That afternoon I load it. I do keep lots of the blue ice packs in the fridge and freezer. I cycle the ice packs out to the coolers. From the cooler, into the fridge. The ones that were in the fridge go into the freezer to freeze again before going into the cooler the next morning. Seem tedious, but its a quick way for me to keep cold ice packs to put in the travel coolers.

Before. We're itching to get to our destination and the last thing you want to do is go shopping. Prices at home are usually less expensive and you can't always find what you want.

BOTH. Will stock up on the staples but wait until there or almost there to get any fresh meat because I have lost to much meat/chicken in the past because the fridge was not as cold as it needed to be.

We do both.

If it's not likely to spoil we will lay it in before we leave. We have a tradition of getting everything hitched and ready the night before. Morning of trip we take wife's van to Waffle House and stop by the store for milk and ice on the way back.

Meats and fresh produce we will get locally on arrival.

Don't know why I thought of it but:

We used to have pizza the first night in camp. It was quick and easy to make. Now we have it the last night. We found we could clean out the fridge, part of an onion, a tomato, left over bell pepper, half a jar of mushrooms, all that goes on the pizza. We don't waste anything and we don't have to haul it home, either.

I load my Dometic with warm stuff and 2 hours later all is cold. Not sure why everyone has problems? I did put a new double quiet fan on the evaporator, seems to work just fine for us.

We stock almost everything we need before leaving, especially if heading to a popular (expensive) area. We can almost always pick up anything we forgot along the way.

We always take extra water and drinks, and toss them in a cooler with ice if more than DH and I will be camping. That cuts down on the constant opening of the fridge door.

A night or 2 before we leave, we bring the fiver to the house from the storage lot. The afternoon before we leave, DH turns the fridge on when he gets home from work. Once the freezer start a to cool he puts a bag of ice cubes in the freezer (we stockpile our own ice). The ice helps cool it quicker. I hit the grocery store on the way home and then put it all straight in the trailer when I get home. I then load everything else in the fiver so we can hitch and go when I get home from work the next day. I have camped places where the closest grocery store was 30 minutes away. That is no fun to drive when you would rather be relaxing at the campsite.

It all depends on which side of the border for us. When we're camping on the Canadian side, we just pack up with whatever we have around the house. But when we're camping on the U.S. side it's just easier to buy it there.

DH usually fills his part of the frig with warm beer & turns it on the day before we leave.... all is then cold for me to finish loading from the house fridge.... last things we load up before we go.


Just as an aside for travel savings with a TT .... we get a big pizza the week before, freeze it in 3 slice packages, then take a pack out into the fridge before we go & 'reheat' on the dashboard while we drive ... no need to stop to eat (or cook) with the dog along the way (and she happily devours the crusts....)

Yep load up the frig before heading out. I start the frig on electric the day before. Set the temp to high I load the frig the next day. and never had problems with the temp getting warm. Later RJD

We put frozen bottled water in the fridge and either stop on the way or setup and go to the store with a preplanned list of what we need. It works great. We rarely have to take anything back home and gives us a chance to look around without dragging the land yacht around with us.

We pack a few days of fridge stuff, milk, eggs, bacon, frozen meat. ETC. then buy enough for a few more days or as needed (depending on the length of time we are gone). Most campgrounds are close to a wally world or a local store. Refilling is not usualy a big problem.
