disabilities

I am new here, not sure if this is right forum or not. Just wondering if anyone else has a disability and what mods to RV you've made, or something you do or have, to make your camping easier. So far, I've either figured out how to do something or just accept that I can't do that anymore and move on.

My wife has Neuropathy & walks with a 3 wheel walker. In "The Little One" there is no room for a walker but if we place the table just right she can maneuver around real well. Also, she can't take long walks around the campground. However we don't let these restrictions keep us from going. In fact we are in the planning stages for a 10 week trip visiting family this spring early summer in AR, OH, IN, IL, WI & MN.

Before this setup we had a 31 foot 5th wheel with two slides & a one ton Dodge dually diesel. Sold that rig thinking it would be easier to travel staying in motels & with family. But soon found for us it was better to have our own kitchen, bedroom & bathroom. So now we travel in "The Little One" that you see in our signature. Both of us are 79 & been married 59 years.

Didn't try to winter in Quartzsite, AZ this winter but would like to do it at least one more time.

So learn what you can do & what you can't do. Never be too proud to ask for help when help is needed.

Can't believe I am the only one who has commented on your post so far. Also, sorry I didn't welcome you to the forum - so will take this oporturnity to do it WELCOME!

I am sure the two of us are the only ones still RV'ing and being disabled at the same time. We will be in the Columbus, OH area in May.

I was at my local RV show last year and there was a camper being shown with a wheel chair lift on it. Didn't pay any attention to the make but it did catch my eye.

I saw one at a dealer in Boise when I was looking.
This one is on a Rockwood.

" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350">

You would need a very good set of mirrors to see around it when mounted to the side.

welcome

No doubt you will get a lot of responses to your current issues. The RV Mfg. group are always looking for ways to sell more campers, with that said, shop around locally for companies that specialize in performing such modifications on van etc;

We designed and built a battery operated car lift that would lift a 1500#+ race car that could very easily be changed/down sized to lift a person, etc. It was also portable.

My wife is disabled but haven't had to do any mods for her yet as she can still move around just not as good as before. She used to help me set up when we arrived at the campgrounds now the mods are to help me set up. I've got it down to about 15 min to set up the main parts, Camper, Awning, outside carpet and lawn chairs. Another 30 min to get everything else in order.

Richard, welcome to the forum. I'm not sure what info you are looking for or if you own a RV at this time. I am disabled but am able to walk short distance and go up and down the steps. We bought our RV after I became disabled and that was a big factor in what we bought. I didn't feel that I could deal with a trailer of any kind so a MH was our only option. I also have a tough time driving long distance so the MH works great. We can pull into a rest area and take a short nap or just lay down to rest the neck. It does limit us as to how much we can do but we do what we can and have fun doing it. Sitting at home feeling sorry for myself wasn't a option. I hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I own a 2014 Sunseeker 3010ds. I had a bad motorcycle accident 5 years ago, pick up truck ran a stop sign, destroyed my right leg and hip, now hip is fused and no knee. I can walk short distances with cane, but scooter is always with me. Getting in and out of this MH is easier with handholds it has, old one didn't have any. Impossible to get from driver's seat to back of MH, have to exit driver's door and go around. Really wanted a Class A this time, but just too hard to get over the engine cover. I love the big outside storage in this MH, now my wife doesn't have to struggle putting large items (chairs, folding table) inside the coach. Still trying to figure out some way to reach the driver's seat slide to adjust it once I'm seated.

Richard: sorry to hear about your accident. I'm a motorcycle rider and I'm always worried about "the other guy" out there. My wife rides now and I warn her constantly about the hazards. We have the same MH you do. We love the storage and counter space.

Richard thanks for sharing and sorry to here about your wreck. I was hit on mine April 2012 by a distracted driver I'm a hurry. Of course you know what she said "I didn't see him ". That added to the neck and back issue. Glad it's working for you and hope to see you on the road sometime. We are I'm St Augustine to participate in a FROG rally. Good luck to you.
