Get use to them - they'll be around for a long time and in increasing numbers.

If I see one buzzing around my back yard while I am enjoying an adult beverage, I will probably see how far a load of 4 shot out of a 3 inch mag 12 gauge will travel.

New motto instead of "Don't Tread On Me" -- "Don't Hover On Me!"

If you live within 30 miles of the capital you can't fly ANYTHING over 1/2lb. Thanks to the antics of a few.

They ARE fun!
You do not need a pilots licence or even have to register a quadcopter for commercial use if the aircraft is under 2 kg.

I know you said "maybe" regarding the need for a pilot certificate, but could you possibly cite the FAA regulation requiring one? I'm not aware of such a requirement.

And Yes - fighting the FAA is often a hard battle, just like fighting the IRS.

Quote from FAA doc re Drone operation.
Commercial operations are authorized on a case-by-case basis. A commercial flight requires a certified aircraft, a licensed pilot and operating approval. The exemption process under Section 333 provides an additional avenue for commercial UAS operations.

Key word is "commercial". Flying one for sport is not commercial.

I recently changed jobs and now work in the Facilities Management area. We maintain 100s of public housing units and are considering the use of a drone for inspections of building exteriors on multi-storey buildings. It has a potential for huge savings and efficiencies in not having to use mechanical means (scaffolding, lifts, bosun's chairs, etc.) to access heights but I expect a lot of opposition based on fear of violation of privacy rights.

I just registered my drone with FAA this week. $5 and I received a number that I must put on any drone I have. Good for 3 years...

Yeah - there is a cutoff date.im not sure what it is.

Just a little info - drones were unheard of when I was a FAA inspector,so I only know what I read and my still employed FAA inspector friends tell me.

The advent of drones sort of remind me of the 1980's when ultra lights were introduced- a lot of people were killed in those things. We had 2 fatalities in Midland,Tx in one day when they both flew into power lines.

That's a commercial use and will require a part 333 waiver. You need to meet specific operator requirements first before applying.

From the FAA Site: Register before midnight EST, January 21st, 2016 and your $5 registration fee will be refunded!

I registered my drone last month and saw the $5 charge on my CC & within 2 hours a $5 credit was posted.

Bummer is, looks like you will have to re-register every 3 years.

I'm in Canada so we'll have our own set of red tape rules but I would expect that there would be stricter requirements for commercial use.

Mothers against drunk drivers (MADD) didn't accept the status quo. Nor will citizens with their intrusion into privacy. Outlawed in ALL National Parks, why you ask; reasonable expectation of the general public enjoying natures wonders, (i.e. tranquil solitude, etc.)

Their is an awakening happening, and we all will have a front seat, some will fight back! You're seeing the first steps as mentioned here, gov't registration. That is the lame attempt to quell the people into thinking that somehow will begin to solve this issue. This will not move quickly, but i'm guessing you will be reading more about skeet practice, as the powers to be, look to control the peepers. Just sayin'

I absolutely agree with you. My winter time neighbor did it last year and I raised hell. He has no need to see my backyard up close !
