Have a daughter that works in the school system. In listening to her it appears that many who receive HS Diplomas merely sat quietly in class, made minimal effort to turn in assignments, and didn't p!$$ off the teachers. They were moved along for 12 years and then turned loose on society.

I used to have to train some of those "HS graduates" and since the machinery they were to operate required a minimal use of fractions it was amazing how few knew how to add or subtract simple ones. Or divide for that matter. One example was when I asked what "half of 1/8th" was, the response was "two eights".

The real scary part was that this "graduate" was working on customers cars that would later be driven 60, 70, 80 mph down the busy freeways.

I evaluated and hired (or didn't hire) college graduates for Federal Govt. jobs. Many applicants couldn't write a simple paragraph without mis-spellings and/or syntax or significant grammatical error. I was looking for people who could at least make their point. It's a sad situation.

Here's a couple from a recent trip to Florida.

At the Nav-A-Gator, a little seafood grill/bar on the Peace River just north of Port Charlotte.
