It's along The Great River Road app. 40 miles north of Alton, IL, and about an hour north east of St. Louis. I made a mistake in saying the Illinois River emptied into the Missouri near that park. It's the Mississippi River, not the Missouri. As you can see, Fall season is beautiful there, so the weekends in September and October are usually booked solid, but there are first come - first serve sites available. We were there during the week before Halloween last year and the colors were in prime. You can also take a river ferry at Grafton that will take you into the countryside between the two rivers and take you north.

Casino Queen in East Saint Louis. There's not much to it, but we are right across from their little playground and have used their free shuttle to the metro. The view is pretty cool.

Yep- took it to show proximity to the train lines. Though- I had to google "UP SD70M" to find out what you were talking about!

You're right about the little climb......we did drive over to Mount Nebo State Park which is only 28 miles from Petit Jean....there is definitely a climb to get to the top of that mountain...18% grade.....sign at the base says all trailers over 24 feet prohibited.....after driving up in my 2500HD, I don't think I even would want to pull my 5X8 utility trailer up there.

The path behind the lakes is beautiful. Fuller Lake is picture perfect. And walking up the Steeple Trail gives you a stunning view of Laurel. Swimming in either lake isn't for the faint of heart. And the trout fishing in the area is top notch (though, the stream.. she doesn't give up fish easy).

I know just where you mean. We hiked the Creek Trail on Sunday. We usually like our electricity but the bigger issue is our 4 legged campers. We were thinking something around 42. If we don't have the dogs we'd try for further down closer to the corner. We found a great spot for the dogs to go swimming at Fuller Lake down by the bridge. Hope to go fishing next year too. Were you fishing in Mountain Creek? Already looking forward to next year!

If you aren't far, October is one of my favorite times to go. Sufficiently cool for a fire and warm clothes, but no bugs. You're right about pets, I didn't think about it, but you're right that you're limited to the front sites.

Yes, we mostly fish Mountain Creek. The easiest way to get to fishing is to just park in the Laurel Lake parking lot. From there, you get your pick of what kind of fishing that you want- go up to the lake and do shore fishing or walk across the street and fish from the bridge down (aka "pickin' thru the rocks"). My favorite spot is to walk down the rocks to the dam/spillway from the parking lot. I actually walk right along the bottom of the dam with my back to the spillway and fish almost literally at my feet. I'll often pull up a catfish, but there are trout in there.

You can also fish the stream at Fuller. Fuller itself is gorgeous to fish- from the walking path to the lake, go to the right (when facing the lake) and walk down to the end around the point. The part between the 2 bridges is stocked but lightly fished- there are some beauties in there.

And lastly, drive down around to the backside of Laurel Lake. Drive the whole way until the road stops and park down there. That part of the stream is great.

But, again- we've had entire camps of guys NOT get fish. The stream is tricky one and doesn't give out fish easily. We've had the best luck on night crawler worms. But some folks swear by powerbait and salmon eggs.

If you really want tough fishing- like ninja style, sneak up on the stream.. walk to the stream that hooks behind the campground. It's not stocked, so if you are blessed with fish, they'll be natives. They are usually very small (unkeepable small), but stunning to look at.

Heh, sorry. I do love that campground. It brings me peace and happiness.

No we aren't that far. Columbia PA. This past weekend was very nice. High 50's during the night and the bugs weren't bad at all.

I share that feeling about the place. We are already talking about hosting there. Someday at least
