Stone Mountain State Park, North Carolina ( Not GA )

This is a great place to stay. One of the best maintained state parks that we have been to. Great hiking trails for all levels of ability. We even found a couple of trails that we were able to go on. We saw deer and wild turkeys in the area almost every day. Had a great time.

Very interested in the logistics of this trip. Did you guys stay at Smith Point? How tough is it to get a reservation? Are there options other than boondocking? The Smith Point govt website looks like they have some good options.

Thanks for any additional info!!

Marty

Marty,

We stayed at Cupsogue park in West Hampton. You have to book it early as it fills up quick. You also need a beach pass to tow your camper out on the beach. Smith Point is nice as well, they have full hook up sites but again you have to book early. The full hook up sites aren't on the actual beach but you can easily walk there and you can see the ocean from most sites.

This is one of our favorite places, too. It is about 25 minutes northwest of Elkin, NC.

Stone Mountain is awesome! Some of the sites are tight to get in to and are sloped. We like going there and hiking to the top of the mountain. Please watch your kids up there, a couple of years ago a Boy Scout fell off of the cliff and died, two weeks prior I took my Troop there, it really impacted us all.

We are looking for a place for early November. Good place for the kiddos to run around? We will be spending time at Dollywood but want to relax in the evenings.

I will be staying at Pine Mountain in a few weeks, up the hill at stop light 6. I'll let you know how it is.

North Pole resort, Wilmington NY. Nice big sites, full hookup plus cable right in the shadow of whiteface mountain

Ausable Chasm, Peru NY. Nothing fancy, but nice size site and right next door to the Chasm adventures.

Oh it was. Things got hairy though when my daughter and I got on the elevator to go back to the parking lot. It's 400 feet into the mountain and 27 stories high. Just as the elevator controller finished telling us how it's being replaced next year, it stopped half way down. It stopped from going down and went back up slooooowwwlllyy. Then stopped again. At that point my daughter was not getting back on and I couldn't blame her, so we had to walk the "nature trail" down, which is a crooked pathway along the ridge of the mountain. It's been a trip we won't forget. Lol
