Need a good margarita recipe
My father-in-law and I enjoy margaritas when we go out for mexican food and wanted to bring the experience home. Problem is, the couple of attempts I've done so far have fallen short. We prefer them on the rocks.
Attempt #1:
Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix + followed recipe on bottle:
1.5 oz. 1800 Gold Tequila and 4.5 oz. of margarita mix
Result: meh
Attempt #1a:
Added about an ounce to the above of fresh squeezed lime juice.
Result: better but not great
Attempt #2 - this recipe:
1.5 oz. 1800 Gold Tequila and 0.5 oz. of Cointreau and 1 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
Result: very strong alcohol; not a lot of sweet/sour taste
Attempt #2a:
Same as attempt #2 but in a bigger cup with some sugar dissolved into hot water, extra lemon juice and a splash of margarita mix
Result: I was fairly intoxicated by this point, but I thought it was good.
My big failures - none of my stuff was cold. We served the drinks on the rocks so they got cold, but it took a bit.
My big challenge - salting the rim of a glass + keeping salt on it was harder than I thought. Each drop of ice into the glass sent little sprinkles of salt onto the counter.
My final result - after my first 2 "meh" margaritas, the "bad" margarita got better with each drink. I drank quite a bit more than I should have for a school night...
SO- what's your tried and true and everyone loves margarita recipe?

I'm pretty sure I had a second Attempt #2a that I added lemon juice since I was out of lime but I was drinking from blue 22oz. cups.

For my reference. Just found this and want to try it:
1 1/2 oz tequila
1/2 oz triple sec
Dash of lemon or lime juice
3 oz sour mix
Lime wedge for garnish
Salt or sugar to rim the glass (optional)

I too have tried many margarita attempts....none have really turned out good. Best solution I have found is just buying pre-made. Best I have found is the Costco brand. For the 9.99 per large bottle it's hard to beat. With that said- tequila and me don't mix well so a jug of margarita tend to last a while at our house.

My problem with alcohol is I can't mix it right! I so rarely drink and only when I have a friend there - booze lasts years in my house generally.

I'm not sure if our non-liquor stores can sell it here. I saw a Jose Cuervo pre-made ones at the liquor store, though. Didn't get one of them; my bill was hefty enough without it!

I have a friend that camps with us that has been known to bring his Margaritaville machine and he can crank out some might fine drinks. One thing I have noticed him using is the flavor packets some people use for flavored water. I have seen a green tea and a pomegranate flavor packs being used.. I have never turned down one of his concoctions, but that's not saying much coming from me

We usually buy the Jose Cuevro with the alcohol already in it so I don't have a recipe for you. However, I do have advice. You need to dump the blue plastic glasses and get Margarita glasses, plastic or otherwise. Presentation is everything. BTW, if you refrigerate the Tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice and other ingredients your drinks will be cold and the ice won't dilute your mix as quickly.

I started with normal 12 oz. glasses that we use for drinking. But once I started throwing extra stuff in to change the taste, I quickly grew out of them and graduated to the blue plastic cups. After one of them, I honestly stopped caring what my cup looked like!
I'll definitely refrigerate my alcohol before hand next time. This literally was a spur of the moment, hey- let me go spend $85 bucks on stuff to make margaritas!

Roses Lime Juice.........found in the grocery store next to Grenadine. Pour a small amount into a cup saucer.......just enough for about 1/8" inch deep or less......dip your glass rims in the juice then dip in your coarse salt you have in the other saucer....viola!!!

OK, this is for a small party for four, or just two people having a Margarita Afternoon:
8 oz of cold Kirkland Silver Tequila (Costco)
2 oz of cold 60 proof Triple-Sec (any brand)
Juice of 6-7 Mexican Limes (know as Key Limes)
2 12-oz Cans of cold Diet Sierra Mist
..........Stir all this carefully.......
Now pour this carefully prepared nector over rocks or onto crushed ice and you can, or not, put a slice of lime in the glass for appearances.
Key Limes are much better than regular Limes and DO NOT use any type of Margarita Mix - that's just sick and wrong!

You should try another tequila. Cuervo is not that great. Try some Alteno. It's really well priced and 100% agave. Specs liquor turned me on to it. If you like drinking on the rocks try this with a cocktail shaker.
1.5 oz tequila
.5 oz triple sec
3-4 oz sweet and sour mix (I use dick's--has a bulldog on the label)
Add all to ice filled shaker and shake. Pour into your salt rimmed glass and enjoy.
Salud!

We from Texas are known for BBQ, football and TexMex food, among other things. The margarita was invented across the Texas border in a bar called Ma Crosby's (I've been there many times) and is a staple to every Mexican and TexMex restaurant here. One thing I know for certain is nobody around here adds 7up to a margarita. Not to disparage anyone but that's a recipe for a drink other than a margarita.

Try this... One can defrosted limeade, three shots triple sec, 5 shots of cheap tequila or 3 shots good stuff. Add ice and season to taste.
Also have a kick ass beer margarita receipe.
