Red face Need a good margarita recipe

My father-in-law and I enjoy margaritas when we go out for mexican food and wanted to bring the experience home. Problem is, the couple of attempts I've done so far have fallen short. We prefer them on the rocks.

Attempt #1:
Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix + followed recipe on bottle:
1.5 oz. 1800 Gold Tequila and 4.5 oz. of margarita mix
Result: meh

Attempt #1a:
Added about an ounce to the above of fresh squeezed lime juice.
Result: better but not great

Attempt #2 - this recipe:
1.5 oz. 1800 Gold Tequila and 0.5 oz. of Cointreau and 1 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
Result: very strong alcohol; not a lot of sweet/sour taste

Attempt #2a:
Same as attempt #2 but in a bigger cup with some sugar dissolved into hot water, extra lemon juice and a splash of margarita mix
Result: I was fairly intoxicated by this point, but I thought it was good.

My big failures - none of my stuff was cold. We served the drinks on the rocks so they got cold, but it took a bit.

My big challenge - salting the rim of a glass + keeping salt on it was harder than I thought. Each drop of ice into the glass sent little sprinkles of salt onto the counter.

My final result - after my first 2 "meh" margaritas, the "bad" margarita got better with each drink. I drank quite a bit more than I should have for a school night...

SO- what's your tried and true and everyone loves margarita recipe?

I'm pretty sure I had a second Attempt #2a that I added lemon juice since I was out of lime but I was drinking from blue 22oz. cups.

For my reference. Just found this and want to try it:
1 1/2 oz tequila
1/2 oz triple sec
Dash of lemon or lime juice
3 oz sour mix
Lime wedge for garnish
Salt or sugar to rim the glass (optional)

I too have tried many margarita attempts....none have really turned out good. Best solution I have found is just buying pre-made. Best I have found is the Costco brand. For the 9.99 per large bottle it's hard to beat. With that said- tequila and me don't mix well so a jug of margarita tend to last a while at our house.

My problem with alcohol is I can't mix it right! I so rarely drink and only when I have a friend there - booze lasts years in my house generally.

I'm not sure if our non-liquor stores can sell it here. I saw a Jose Cuervo pre-made ones at the liquor store, though. Didn't get one of them; my bill was hefty enough without it!

Just add ice. Salt is optional.
