Need advice from quilters

I am not full time yet and I got the eye roll from the DH when I informed him that my Sophia is coming along for the ride. I have planned out how I am going to bring projects (lets face it, my 23bd Greywolf won't hold all my fabric) along with me. I am planning on labeling the bins my projects are in and have them shipped to me if I have someone reliable at home base. So question #1 is has any of you done this successfully and how did you do it?

Question #2 is any recommendation for a good travel iron that does not draw 1100 watts. With only a 1000 way inverter, it won't work and I don't want to be running a generator just to iron. I will bring my Oliso along for when there is shore power. I did just pick up a nifty little roller tool that works great for pressing the seams, but I will need to get the wrinkles out of the fabric.

my wife brings her quilting stuff with us when we camp-(she gets up early - I dont:-) ). mostly always plugged the camper in- no issues with her iron or sewing machine

Baw ha ha ha. Many years ago when we lived off the grid, I used a treadle sewing machine and had a couple of flat irons. They worked great.

This has me grinning, never expected a quilting related question! Have a plastic tote with my travel quilting paraphernalia as well. Have tried several, most not very satisfactory, but I found a little Black and Decker travel steam iron, model x50, that does a real nice job. I THINK it says it draws 615w? I press out large expanses at home, but it is great for seams and finishing. No immediate plans for full timing, but doing quite a few extended trips. I have a 42 year old Elna Lotus that is now essential camping equipment😊. Hubs can't look crossed eyed at it because it's a whole lot smaller than his fishing tackle case! Enjoy!

Well, isn't that the question of the day? I have a little Rowenta traveler, does a fair job I will have to check the draw. I have spent most of the time doing hand work this Summer rather than drag my machine. Next year look out, I am taking a full set up. The big question is where to put my design wall?

I have that figured out already. Since ours is just a little 23 footer, there is no wall enclosing the bedroom. Just a nice wide curtain. Add some flannel to that and wa-lal, design wall. Not a huge one, but it will work. Plus, when we are full time and I run out of fabric, I will have to check that important app for the closest Quilt shop. I am glad there are ladies out there enjoying the question.

My wife is an avid quilter. She uses a Clover Model B-68SP iron. 120 watts. Compact. Puts out plenty of heat. No steam but does have an attachment spray. We use a 100 watt Renology solar panel as we are snowbirds and boondock a lot. No problems with power unless too many days of clouds and then we charge with the Honda. If I get bored the solar panel keeps me busy as I have to turn it into the sun every couple hours. I turn the panel into the sun so the side shadow is perpendicular and the rear shadow as long as possible. If I don't the charging amps really drop off.

Spouse carries a lot of fabric with her and we stop at lots of quilt stores. 185 so far. We don't have much room in our 19 foot 5th wheel but we have found quite a bit of extra storage behind areas that Forest River covered up with paneling. She also has plastic tubs that act as a headboard.

I don't know where you are traveling and I am not a big fan of Texas (very little public ground) but near San Antonio is Lake Medina RV park. We usually go there in February for a couple months as they have a large clubhouse where about a dozen ladies set up and leave their machines and they get together to quilt most mornings. Also lots of room between sites. Happy quilting.

Hi,

My wife brings a Singer Featherweight and sometimes her big machine (Pfaff?), a small Rowenta iron, cutting board, small ironing board, and various plasic gizmos, and her fabric is in plastic storage tubs. But with a Silverback 33RL, we have plenty of room. She does her cutting and ironing on the center island, and sets up the machine itself on the dinette table.

That is along the lines of the iron posted in message #2, which was an antique Coleman. I think this one may be a little bit safer. I am going to have to put it on my Christmas list.

We were full time for about a year. We had a 38ft 5th wheel. We had to buy a house when every compartment was full of batting. We ran out of room for anything but batting.

You could also cover one of those folding pressing boards with flannel, if I remember right, it's like a tri-fold? Anyway, it will fold up and store easily while not in use. You might also consider large zip lock bags for projects. They come in a 2 gallon size. This would take up very little space, but be easy to locate. Another suggestion would be the vacuum seal bags? I always travel with projects and look forward to spending time in the RV with nothing to do but sew!
