I worked in an aircraft factory as a maintenance mechanic for 34 years. First 25 ... loved my job spinning wrenches. Next 5 years brought company and management changes ... it was alright going to work. Last 4 years ... Sunday afternoon I'd find myself dreading going in Monday morning. Decided to retire and boy howdy was a weight lifted off my shoulders ... I don't miss it nor have I ever looked back. I saw a few of my senior fellow workers that just couldn't leave the "love of their life" job piling up the retirement money only to be 6' under within 1-3 years of retirement. What did that get them? Sorry ... I'm a get out and enjoy it while you are able kind of guy.

Bad decisions in life can cause lots of pain in retirement. Have a friend who is divorced five times, paid child support until he was 62, lost most of his 401K to former spouse, all because he could not keep his zipper closed. He is now 66 and will never be able to afford retirement.

And now his zipper all rusted up !!!

Even with the best plan- when the work income stops one has to have a be ready to cut back.

I tell young people all the time to put as much money as you can in a 401k and in a high risk fund.
When I was close to retirement, a co-worker came to me for some advice. She was a few years younger than I was and had a few more years to go. I was turning 62 with 31 years and she was in mid 50s with 27 years with the company. She had been contributing to her 401K almost the entire 27 years, but had NEVER bothered to make investment elections! So it defaults to the safest ( read almost zero return ) investments. My jaw almost hit the floor. After all those years, she had only $40K in her 401K! She told me she thought she'd be fine. YIKES.

And she was only contributing $1,500/year too! I guess she doesn't review statements she receives either!

What I don't get are people that take 401K loans out. Pretty dumb move too.

I have maxed out my 401k every year I have worked including the catch-up once I turned 50. I have never been in any fixed income type funds until recently since I am now 58 and going to retire.

Yea, funny story, had a co-worker ( really young guy mid 20s ) come to me and ask if there were any circumstances where he could take money out of his 401K. Told him without severe penalties, there were only a couple reasons he could take money out. But if he could avoid doing so, he should try to find a better way to get the money he needed. But barring some "special" circumstances, he should never take the money out, especially for something stupid like a new car stereo. And I asked what he needed the money for. His answer...a new car stereo!

Hmm. Which is worse:

5 disappointed women, or 1 man disappointed 5 times?

There's a reason divorce is expensive....

...because it's worth it!

I think after the second divorce there would be hints of where the problem lies

What does that indicate about the next 3 wives then? Something wrong with their thought process.

You're right.

After 5 divorces, seems like you have to take a good hard look in the mirror and ask yourself, "What's the common denominator here?"

Sometimes it just takes practice. My uncle Ted married 10 times. 5 times to the same woman. Anyway, sixth wife stayed for years and out lived him. They seemed happy.
