Annual National Park Pass

Learned something new while making reservations on Recreation.gov just a bit ago. While checking out it asked for my national park pass number and discounted my reservations 50% for the COE park. I surely don't believe I have ever stayed in any hotel for $8 a night. Must be cheaper to camp!

We've used that pass for several years now. There is no better bargain anywhere, especially from our federal government. Besides that, the COE parks we've been in are superb.

I've camped in some very nice CoE campgrounds. If you want resort amenities then CoE campgrounds aren't for you but if you want a quiet and a relaxing place to stay then go for it. As a senior with an "America the Beautiful" pass you can't beat the price. The most I've spent so far is $15/night. I got my pass about 4 years ago before I had a RV. When we went to the Painted Desert and I paid $10 for the pass that was the best $10 I have every spent. If you want to save even more become a volunteer host and stay for nothing.

dbarr, if you are 62 or older, you can pay a one-time $10 fee and get a senior pass (forget exactly what they call them and mine is out in the truck) that gets you that 50% discount at COE campgrounds plus free admission to national parks. And, you don't have to book through Recreation.gov. If you are just stopping into a Corps campground in the middle of the week with no reservations, show your pass at check-in and get the same 50% discount.

Not a hell of a lot of advantages in getting old, but that one and Mickey D's "senior coffee" for 57 cents are two that come to mind.

EDIT: The senior pass is good for the rest of your life...no expiration date...until YOU expire

I've had annual passes before just never knew they were good outside of a national park or site. It is more of a bargain than I thought.

Well being a road warrior with over 4 1/2 million miles under my belt I traveled the Midwest (at that time) and stayed in a few Motel 6's BUT, they weren't $6 unless you wanted to stare at the walls. It was another $1 for a key to turn on the TV and some places needed a deposit if you wanted a towel. The cheapest room I ever stayed in was for $4 at a Holiday Inn just west of Youngstown, OH that was going out of business because the turnpike closed the nearby exit and they were left high and dry with no business.

I've been using mine now for 7 years. We do COE parks most of the time. Most have excellent sites. Some have sewer, but most just water and electric. Great bargin for the $10 lifetime pass.

Another "good Deal" discount pass is Passport America For $44/YR ($300-something lifetime) you get 50% discount at private RV parks within the system (and there are a ton of them)

For instance, we are staying at 2 different parks, 2 nights each on the way back from Goshen this year total savings is $60, well worth the price of a annual membership.

You may want to do like we did and just get a lifetime, it pays for itself after @ 20 nights.

De-Hijacking the thread... NPS & COE Passports are a GREAT deal as well between all three you have a TON of options to camp throughout the USA and canada (Oh, Passport America has Canadian CGs as well )
