another program like that is Skype. free calls client to client but there is some charge for getting a land line # (so people without skype can call you) and a low charge (2.3 cents/minute) for making calls to landlines/cells. Free Skype calls and cheap calls to phones - Skype

I looked and its $3/month for unlimited calls to USA and Canada

I was talking to a coworker the other day about this and we sat down and figured out the same thing. Calling out using google chat with the voice plugin on the browser for outgoing calls and then the google voice manager to handle the incoming calls and voicemails and it all worked great. I also found out that they can port over my cell phone number, so nothing would skip a beat there too. That's good news! So, i ordered my Ipad2 early this morning and bought it with the optional Verizon connectivity so the wife can use it to surf the web while we're on road trips. Looks like we can connect and disconnect at will, no service contracts for the internet service, so that's a huge plus as well since we're normally near wi-fi and won't need their tower service.

Thanks for the tips and input everyone... There's more techies in here than I thought.

Joe

Send a message via Skype™ to scubieman
You guys could just use magic jack or vonage. Both are cheaper and VOIP systems.

Well, I have the iPad now and I really like it. Tested Verizon connection over the weekend and reception was great. I can confirm that there is no contract for their Internet and I started out with their 1gb plan for testing over the weekend. I still have lots of data time left and for only 20 bucks, it was well worth it. Now, the bad news is that I don't believe there is a way to install the google apps that I mentioned before onto the safari browser or the os itself. There is another browser called sky fire (I think) that I'm looking into to see if it will do what I want it to do. Other than that, this little piece of equipment is a heck of a lot better than carrying around the laptop everywhere we go.
