Buying WDH From eTrailer

Hey everyone

Looking to upgrade from my Eaz-Lift 48053 1,000 lbs system with a single sway control to a better system.

Equal-i-zer WDH w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 12,000 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW

or

Equal-i-zer WDH w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW

Seems like eTrailers prices fluctuate throughout the week (seems strange but could be based on supply). But I haven't purchased from them before, but I people speak highly of them.

I was curious if they typically run any sales before the start of camping season?

Not sure about the sale pricing.

I bought my hitch from them. I had lots of help from them in advance. I had issues with the shipper causing some damage to the hitch body sheering off grease zirks (blueox). Etrailer was quick to try and address the issue but ended up having me deal with the manufacturer because of the damage. I recieved everything fine in a timely manner with RMA labels for the return and I was very happy with their service. Etrailer did follow up to make sure everything worked out ok.

I also bought some reading lights from them that were backordered. You may want to make sure they are in stock because they don't always tell you if they are backordered and you end up just waiting. I was in no hurry for the lights so I did not push but it took 3-4wks to ship them. I did receive them and all was well without any additional follow up.

I went with the heavier hitch setup and very glad I did but it depends on your tongue weight.

I've had good luck with them over the years. I'm using a Curt Tru Trac w/ 1000 lb bars now. Four point sway, does decent pulling nearly 33 feet. A little cheaper than equilizer when I bought it. All kinds of options when talking hitches...which is why I like Etrailer. They've got video reviews on almost every product. That, and if you have a question they don't have the answer to, they'll go open a box and measure something to find out.

Shouldn't you know which of these 2 you need? What is the GTW and TW of your current trailer?

Based on what Bikendan said, if the difference in the two options is $27, I'd just go with the larger one

Why suggest going with the larger one based upon price alone? Shouldn't the choice be based upon trailer specs?

Everyone always says “get the bigger truck for the next trailer” so why not get the bigger hitch? I can’t imagine a 10k hitch being good enough but a 12k hitch not being good enough

I am making the assumption that both are adequate based on the original question. If one doesn’t fit or doesn’t work or is in some way inadequate, it eliminates itself. If both are viable options, I’d spend the extra pennies and get the larger

Because most hitches come with 10% rated bars (10000 rating with 1000 lb bars, etc.) and too much spring bar can be just as bad as not enough. There needs to be a little give in the bars or you basically fuse the truck and trailer frame together. Anything from a minor nuisance to handling problems if the road is bumpy enough. Most hitches can be upgraded by swapping to higher rated bars down the road though.

Which is precisely what I am saying. If one of them is inadequate (too “large” or not “large” enough) it isn’t (or shouldn’t be an option). If one isn’t an option, it is eliminated. If I ask a question comparing two “similar” but sized differently products, it’s because I know both will work, but look for opinions on which is better. I wouldn’t ask about two if only one would work. Which is why I added the caveat (and should have added it to the original post) that if one isn’t adequate that gives you the answer

Understood. That was more for anyone happening across the thread that might think "I've got a 600 TW trailer...if 800 is good, 1200 will work much better!"

The reason I listed both was due to me not having an actual weight. Those numbers were based on factory weights as well as GVWR on the trailer. Specs I was given were as follows:

Shipping Weight = 6360 lbs
UVW = 6398 lbs
GVWR = 9515 lbs

I beleive I am over estimating, but call it 8000 loaded. From all my reading, 10%-15% would be ideal for tongue weight.

10% = 800 lbs
11% = 880 lbs
12% = 960 lbs
13% = 1040 lbs
14% = 1120 lbs
15% = 1200 lbs

I know I am assuming these numbers, but half of those % would put me over the 1000 lb limits on the 10k setup.

I need to get everything loaded up and weighted but haven’t done it yet. Need to find scales close enough that we could do it on the way to camping. I’ve got a 2 and 4 yr old that loves camping. So if they had wait on me hooking up fully loaded without camping I’d be in trouble ha.

You’re probably pretty close on that estimate. Honestly, you could get away with either size. In my experience, 200 lbs give or take isn’t really noticeable. Much over that in bar rating and they start to get ineffective. If I were pushing 1000 lbs I’d go ahead and round up to 1200.

That was my thought as well. Im still considering the Blue Ox as well, but they only have 1000 or 1500 bars. Feel like 1500 lb may be to much.

The 1500s are designed to cover 900-1400 (they know the hitch weighs 100lbs). It looks like that covers the high range for you but close on the low side.

I was on the similar border you were on but knew that I packed heavy so I got the 1500 blueox. Glad I did. My tongue weight is 16% and heavier than I thought it would be. Granted you would just have to replace the bars but who wants to do that on a new hitch.

If your trailer has all the storage in the front and you pack like I do then bigger is better. If storage is in the rear you are still on the bubble and have a tough choice.
