We traveled all 48 states in a 36' gas coach over a 3.5 year period. Most of this with two grandkids. So a gas coach will go anywhere a diesel coach will go. Actually my gas coach had more road clearance and would go many places my 40' DP won't go.

Many times we have said we wish we could of put the old gas coach on top of the DP frames we had later.

So don't think you have to have a DP. We love the Berkshire we have now but the gas coaches are just fine.

As to cost. Now is a great time to find a left over model year coach.
We bought our 2014 40' Berkshire after the 2015's were out. Paid $182,000 and then got a $10,000 rebate from Forest River.

Just a note. That was at Total Value RV in Elkhart also.

No doubt, but probably more like just a "little" older. If the legacy had the floorplan of our Georgetown, it would have been a no brainer!

Floorplan was important, as we needed a bunkhouse model. That eliminated probably 90% of the models offered. My price range was under $150k, which basically kept me to a used DP (new Legacy @ $140k was a front runner) or new gas. As we are new to the motorhome scene, not full timing (have a 3rd grader), and our adventures will be mostly limited to summer break, we didn't feel that we would be taking advantage of what a DP fully has to offer. If our child, that's still at home, had been older and closer to college age, that would have given the DP a higher rating, as we would have done more traveling through the school year with just the Mrs and I. That said, we found a floor plan we love, Georgetown 364TS, and was able to get it new for just under $100k. Weighing gas/fuel prices, fuel economy, and maintenance, the difference in price/economy will go a long way for the next several yrs that we own this coach. We are sacrificing some ride comfort, possible economy (fuel price vs mpg), and drivability (maintaining speed on hills/towing), but we like our floor plan and what it has to offer over all others, cheaper to maintain, and when we use it, we are on vacation and can take our time, as we are not stuck inside of a truck for hours on end. All this said, I will end up with a DP when the time is right.

That GT go anywhere any other coach go. Pick the biggest hill in the U.S. It won't take you 5 minute longer to get to the top. Now you won't pass anyone going up!! And you spent $100,000 less and staying & seeing the same places the rest of us are.

hills

MY DP was a choice based on power, gas Mileage and ability to pull my trailer up and down the hills of PA and New England..my Gas coach did fine but I do not miss the engine noise up front and making my wife and I shout at each other while climbing a hill

That gets me too, people drive an entire home into the forest, then claim that they are "camping". Double LOL.

We call it camping...might not pull into a forest like you real campers....lol....what I do is be able to enjoy my hobby which is my Harley's and travel to places so that I can ride and explore the area..since my wife's kidney transplant that's the only way I can do what I love...so negative comments about what others do differently might be because they have no choice..

I guess you found me out...lol. I personally prefer RV places that include some feel of the area that we are staying, but also want to stay at a place that has nice amenities. Camping to me is a vacation, and I prefer to have the bed/fridge/tv, etc. that I am comfortable with during my travels. Friends refer to what we do as "glamping". I think that over the years, camping has taken on a new definition, with multiple interpretations.

X2 on Total Value RV. We went there for a test drive last week. Dave, the salesman we delt with, was very knowledgeable (he actually owns a MH, which helps ) great guy to talk to and absolutely ZERO pressure. If you are looking for a dealership in the Elkhart area, I would look no further!

Ya I know all of them there at total value. I've traded there 4 times. Dave is my salesman too. If I'd been on the ball I'd let you in on the best places to eat up there. We go up there 3 or so times a year.

Make it x3 on Total Value RV. Dealt with Chad and process was great, not to mention he beat all other prices and the coach had less than 50 miles on it. Will go there first for next coach. As they say, "buy em where they're built".

Darn! bet you could have steered us from staying at Days Inn & Suites

We had dinner with Bob & Cindy at Da Vinci's Restaurant--would that have been one of your choices? The food was quite good!

We will probably be going back up in Feb so feel free to give us the gouge!

Cost of diesel versus gas motorhomes

Well we always have our RV. So no motel-- Essenhaus restaurant in middlebury. And for Best hamburgers in town it's the Flipping Cow. Just west and north on 19 from total value. Then for the best deli carry out it is the Martin Food store. They have everything- salad bar--hot & cold sandwiches --all kinds of complete dinners. At the corner of CR 4 & 19. Again just west of Total Value.

And remember free camping at TV if you buy there. Shipshewana large Amish community 15 mile to the east. Shopping & food there too

Not too sure about that February stuff in northern Indiana !!
