Drill Advice

I have an old dewalt 9.6v cordless drill that is about 15 years old. It works for small things around the house but the batteries are getting tired. I can't complain, 15 years from a nicd battery is solid. I want to use this drill for the stabilizer jacks on the new trailer. Question is do I replace the packs for $40 total or buy a shiny new 20v for $160. Keep in mind I don't use this tool very very often at my desk job

You could buy a Black and Decker matrix for $40, which is what I use to run my jacks up and down with no issues.

If it is a "spend as little as possible" situation,
i had a similar situation & bought a harbor freight
rechargeable battery and put it in my old battery housing.
$12.50 about 6 months ago.
You would have to consider all factors but worked for me.

If you get the new Dewalt, you could pick up a food mixer beater thingy and let your DW use the dirll in the kitchen...

BTW, it would also be good for mixing LARGE batches of cocktails at rallies! Just get one of those 5 gallon paint mixer paddles.

Split the difference & get one of those Ryobi combo packs. Usually about $99 at Home Depot. Mine came with a drill, a circular saw & two 18V batteries.

I have been surprised at how often I've used that circular saw. Later added hedge trimmer & blower. The blower goes on camping trips. Use it to blow debris off roof & slideouts. Also handy to get that campfire blazing.

I really like this little drill. I've had mine for years now and have beat the snot out of it with no problems. The two speeds are perfect, low RPM for your stabilizer jacks then shift it into high gear for drilling. A second battery is included so you'll always have a charged spare ready to go.
Not the cheapest, but reasonable considering the second battery.

I have a 14.4 drill, circ saw, light that I found batteries for on the net. Not as heavy as OEM but were 1/3 the price and have worked well over a year.

Every Fathers Day Lowes has a sale on DeWalt drills. Picked up an 18 a few years ago (before 20s) with 2 batteries, charger, and case for $99 or about the cost of 1 1/2 14.4 OEM batteries.

I'm not always comfortable with our throw-away society. I hate to get rid of something that still functions just fine. I've been buying 18 volt batteries for my Black & Decker drill and weed-wacker (they use the same battery) for about 10 years now. Have 4 of them and 4 chargers; usually need 2 to weed-wack the yard, and I take one with the drill on camping trips for the jacks. I recycle the old batteries, but the drill and weed-wacker run just fine; so as long as they still run and I can still get batteries, I'll keep using them.

i like the rigid brand at home depot. They have a lifetime guarantee on their batteries so if one battery dies, i just get a new one with no out of pocket expense. The Drill is still going strong 15 years later. it looks used, but it does it's job

Take it to Batteries Plus. They can usually refurb the battery packs for about half the cost of a new one. You'll get new battery cells in your old housing, but they will work just like a brand new battery.

There are lots of deals out there. Several months ago I bought a new B&D 20 volt drill with extra batteries and a tool kit for what you will pay for an extra battery for your old 9.6 drill. Shop around, you might be surprised at what you can find!

If you go to tag sales the $99. Ryobi "deal" can be found for $5.00 or so.

They seem to be given as presents and used till the batts go bad. Then sticker shock!

$39.00 will get a new pair of off brand batts that work just fine.

Talking about Home Depot and Ryobi, I added their air compressor to my collection, and use it to top off my travel trailer tires.

That looks promising. Been hauling a pancake compressor because I couldn't find anywhere, other than truck stops, that had enough pressure to get my truck tires up to 80 psi. Do you think it has enough wind to get a truck tire up to pressure? Sometimes these small pumps can get to the high pressures, but they overheat before they can move the volume for a larger tire.

I like the Ryobi 18-volt. Use the drill a lot, but bought the more expensive 4 amp-hour lithium battery. Also works well in my Ryobi weed wacker.

I love my Milwaukee drills...I have the 18V Hammer drill and the M12 drill/driver....both do what I need them to do, and both work on the stabilizers. The M12 Driver can be had for as cheap as $89 and the regular 18V Drill is $199.
