Good Sam insurance, let's discuss

Food for thought...

The good news is that I just had "Good Sam" price the insurance on my 2010 Sandpiper and they will save me $50/year over my current policy with Blue Sky...or I thought it was Blue Sky.

I'm realizing in this day and time that just because a company (ie Good Sam) adds "insurance" to their name does not mean that your insurance will be with them...it may be "through" them. Case in point is what I realized about my current Blue Sky policy: my Blue Sky policy is with the RLI Insurance Co, with the General Agent of Record being Recreation Insurance Specialist and the Policyholder's Agent of Record being The Good Sam Insurance Agency...yes, Good Sam. Remember, my policy is with Blue Sky that has been discussed on several thread on FRF.

So, after getting a GS Member Bulletin in the mail I called Good Sam Insurance today to get a quote. Low and behold, the lady quoted a policy to me with Allied Insurance which saved me the $50/year. But, my FW insurance will be with/through Good Sam Insurance. It's all a bit confusing to me and a great deal convoluted.

So, bottom line, it's all about your deductible, your premium, and most important, how they serve you when you have a claim. Again, the good news is that working through GS Insurance, I got a better premium.

I forgot to note that the $50 is a 15% decrease in my rate from $340 annually to $290.

Nice price! You are right - my ONLY concern is what happens if we need to make a claim?

We have Good Sam insurance as well and we saved almost $260 a year over our old Progressive insurance we got through USAA!

Would love to hear from other Good Sam insurees - especially those of you who have had to make a claim on the insurance.

Just Curious,

In this world where every company wants you to bundle services, what is the advantage to using Good Sam or Blue Sky for your RV compared to just getting your House/Auto/Boat/RV/Toys insured from a company that does it all?

.....Or do you guys insure everything with GS or BS?

FWIW We have Sam's Insurance on our Sunseeker, and thought to 'save' by bundling; house, cars, RV. Turned out that GIECO house/car bundle with Good Sam RV was the cheapest way to go - why? - don't ask me. We haven't had to use the insurance with Sam, but have had only super experiences with their road side service, based on three instances, including one xmas eve evening failed timing belt in the truck. Finding a provider was tough, but they did it. They kept me in the loop as they searched, and followed up after to ensure that it worked out. I was impressed

We insure our vehicles with USAA (have for years - best vehicle insurance in the world if you can become a member of USAA! )

USAA however, does not do RV or Boat insurance - they farm it out to Progressive - who I was happily using until we got our 5er this year.

I got the progresive quote and it was almost $1,000 Plus, they were "forcing" me to get a Mexico rider - which I did not want.

Shopped around and found I could get BETTER coverage: $7K personal effects + comprehensive & collision at $250 deductible instead of $500, $20K vacation insurance (some kid runs through your camp and breaks his leg and mom & dad sue for medical) & towing+ trip inturruption insurance (up to $7K) for a bit under $700. Smas RV insurance was a no-brainer.

Another reason to go with them is they specialize in RVs - for instance our policy covers the installed hitch on the truck - something a non-RV company might miss.

IMO, an important thing to look for is how they handle total destruction or theft of a new (within a year or two) RV. GS will buy you a new one.

Yep, that's exactly what I heard from the rep today too Barry. And after that year or 2, they will give you what you paid for it. There's also an intangible piece too. If you have issues with GS Roadside or GS Insurance you play the I have everything with GS card.

I had forgotten to mention this! -- This is what actually sold me on the policy.

As I understand it, they will give you new for totaled RV for the first 5 years, after that, what you paid for the RV.

Sweet Deal IMHO!
