Good Sam - is it worth it?

What are the campground discounts like? The Flying J gas "discount", we don't have many Flying J's or Pilots in Michigan, but we're going to Disney in October, you think that would be worth the price? What are your thoughts on Good Sam?

I have been Rving since 2000 and just joined last year. My travelling buddy, who is a member, reccomended me and I got a 3yr membership for $33. I used it twice last year and it more than paid for itself. The campground discount is 10%. On a week long trip it saved me $50 and on a holiday trip it saved $25. The Pilot/Flying J discount is a couple cents per gallon. I only use it when traveling as those service centers are not near my home. If you can get a "good deal" on a membship and can use it for the campground discounts go for it!

Thank you for the response, I'm considering a Jellystone weekend this spring, and may seek out Good Sam campgrounds to save if I do join.

I think it is worth it. The campground discount is 10% which is pretty worth it. I use the flyingJ discount for diesel on trips. I love the ease of pulling into the truck Bays to fill up. Also you get some deals from camping world which is good. You also get a free magazine highways. Not the best but i like any magazine about rving.

Jellystone's do not honor Good Sam's, at least in my experience. They have thier own point system but it takes quite a few stays to make any difference. You don't have a membership fee but they are typically higher than most campgrounds but they do have alot of bells and whistles for the kids.

The one I'm looking at says they honor the Good Sam's 10% discount. *shrug*

Awesome!..Made me wonder if I've been missing out on dicounts but I checked on line and the one's I have been to do not....I see where some do...must be up to the franchise owner to honor Good Sam's or not. Since the campground you frequent does, makes it a no brainer...

I did belong to “Good Sam“. I now belong to AAA Of Michigan. AAA discounts Disney, Good Sam does not. AAA RV Plus is a better deal for the money. Also note, Good Sam claims you get free shipping on purchases from Camping World. Read the fine print, “ on orders of $100.00 or more”. I also looked into Good Sam extended warranty. I found a better deal thru another company. The company I went with covered more. The deductible and price was less. Like they say “ compare apples with apples”.
So, if you frequent a Good Sam camp ground, It maybe worth the money to joint, for the camping discount.

Yes, that's the one!
I'm going to look into the AAA one as well, esp. if I could save money on my Disney addiction, I would do it!

Good Sam provides the 10% discount, good magazine (Highways) and free shipping from CampingWorld. I live 1 and 1/2 hour drive each way from their closest store so I do order from them as the other RV stores near me are a lot more expensive. The Flying J discount card, which I do have, but don't use much because the diesel, even with the six cent per gallon discount is still a lot more then I can get it for at many other fuel stops. They are nice places to stop but I wonder why their diesel prices are always so high? I am cheap and will buy diesel from the low price stations when I can but if you have a large RV it is not always easy to get in and out of the cheaper fuel stops. The Flying J around hear are now Denny's and with the AARP card you can get 20% off from 4pm to 10pm.

I got a Good Sam discount this fall in Frankenmuth. They asked if I was a member. Nice surprise.

We paid for our membership by getting the club pricing at Camping World and paid less with membership vs paying full price. Now everything is bonus with Good Sams.
Going to AAA travel save me a $1,000 a few years ago to Disney. They are in a partnership with them.

Just joined Good Sam (finally...) this last trip out. The campground price for the 1 yr was $19 and I saved that much with the discount on 6 nights of camping. I figure it's already paid for itself and considering we have a 5-6 week trip planned for this summer everything else will be bonus! We are also members of KOA and camp there pretty frequently - again just a week or 10 days of 10% discount will pay for the membership and you get points you can use for free camping, etc. I've found KOAs are usually a bit more expensive but have more stuff for the kids to do, generally and you have a certain quality you expect that you might not find at other places. I also like their website that you can book online with no hassle of calling around.

We also use Good Sam and KOA, but the one that we get the most value from is Passport America with its 50% discount. With 131 nights camping in 2012 we saved over $200 with it in addition to GS and KOA.

We have been with Good Sams for several years and spend 4weeks year camping. Ever year we more than pay for the membership just in CG discounts. Also camping world and Good SAMs team up for some nice discounts. I also like their roads side service, far better than AAA IMO.

You can get the Flying J / Pilot discount card for free just by visiting one of their service centers and asking for one, or by joining Forest Rivers Owners Group (F.R.O.G.) (also free). Visit the F.R.O.G. web site at FROG - Forest River Owners Group
