Good Sam membership

I was thinking about getting a Good Sam membership and was wondering if they were really worth the money. The current deal they have is you will get a free night of camping and looks like they added some more discounts like Flying J, Camping World and maybe some others.

I searched for some threads before posting and could only find some that were pretty old so wanted to see if could get some more recent reviews on whether or not people were happy with the membership.

Thanks for the help.

I think its a fair deal...especially if you camp at private CG's that are members of the program as well. You usually save 10% off the rate. Also Camping world gives special pricing now and occasionally deals on things. For example I just yesterday was looking at the hardwired surge protector that was somewhere around $225 normal price....put in my number and automatically saved 30%!! For me that purchase alone paid for the membership. Beware of all the junk mail they send you...it is a lot!

The very low cost make it a good deal IMHO. The Highways every other month is worth the cost but then I get a lot out of it. I also got auto and RV insurance through Good Sam, its GMAC insurance, at a better price then I could find any where else. I don't mind the junk mail that they send but I have read complains from
other forum members who don't like it.

Our recent trip this summer included a total of 8 nights in 2 different camp grounds
that offered Good Sam discounts.
The 1st stop had a special where I got a year for only $15.
Wow, I saved that much right there at the check in desk and saved a few bucks
more at the next stop.

We spend the bulk of our weekends at state and national parks but if you go to
private camp grounds it will likely pay for it'self in discounts.

I'm not sure what kind of discount you get at Flying J?? I was told at one that
any discount was only on diesel not gas.
Anyone else hear that??

Oh yeah we rarely order from Camping World but just did order one of those
peel and stick "states visited" maps. I got free shipping just by putting in my
Good Sam number. Saved $6 on that order.

So yeah, I think it's worth it.

I agree that it is worth the small price for a membership. The Pilot/Flying J discount has been worth the membership price alone. The current discounts are 4 cents off on gas, 6 cents off on diesel, and these are off the cash price. The Canadian discounts are different as they are based on liters. There is also a discount on propane. You do have to apply for an additional card, it does not work just to use your Good Sam membership card. Also as stated above, the 10% discount on park fees add up when you can use them.

Now that Good Sam and Camping World are one membership, I am very satisfied with what it offers. I bought a new RV recently and outfitted it by the internet at Camping World. I also purchased their book that lists all the campgrounds in the country and rates most of them. I have found that to be useful. IMHO, well worth the membership fee.

I have been a member of----------

I have been a member of GOOD SAM since 1999. The membership pays for itself by the campgrounds you use. Just recently Good Sam joined partnership with Camping World for a dual membership of one cost. That alone is worth every penny of the membership cost..

Also I just discovered recently when I registered for a weeks stay at UCHEE Campground at Fort Benning in Columbus,GA , the military campgrounds accept the "GOLDEN AGE PASS" for a discount. The regular price was $19.00 per night with full hook up including cable, with the discount was dropped to $12.00 per night. The UCHEE campground was the nicest campground that we have stayed in and we have stayed in a lot including some called "RESORT" campgrounds. The US Army has a hidden jewel at Fort Benning!!!!!!!!!! Was we surprised when we check in.

I would like to know more about the Flying J fuel discount. I have a Flying J within a few miles of my ranch, but the price of diesel is always 10 to 12 cents more there then other local diesel prices.

Looks like it's 6¢ gal but you have to get one of their cards too.

I bought the Good Sam membership too, but found that most of the campgrounds that gave a discount for Good Sam members would give us the same discount with our AAA card. So I don't think I will renew next year. Only saved $7 so far using the Good Sam card.

But the KOA membership I bought in May has already paid for itself. Most of the KOA parks we stayed at were top notch and I am very pleased with the customer service. So I will be renewing that one next year.

Good Sam membership with camping world coupons and discounts is very very dangerous to the wallet.

On a positive note, saved so much this year alone that even if I renew my membership for the next 10 years and never buy another thing, I will have still come out ahead.

In order to get the fuel discount you have to use their Pilot/flying J card.
Not sure how Good Sam membership helps here?

Just a heads up FYI, there is a discussion about the Pilot Flying J cards over
on Rv.net Some folks claim they didn't get the discount. Some claim improper
billing and some said they were happy.
Those that were unhappy were very unhappy.
Just something to consider......
I had a clerk at a Flying J tell me the diesel discount was 5¢ and there
was no gas discount. The Good Sam site says otherwise but you gotta
get the Flying J card to get it.
Apparently there is a lot of miss-information out there from station to station.

For what its worth, the program has always worked for me just as advertised, 6 cents per gallon off of the cash diesel price. You have to watch pricing though, Pilot/Flying J are sometimes higher that other stations even with the discount.

i became a member in 93 or 94. after 1st yr, went for the life membership.
enjoy the hiway mag.
have found that (most of the time) you can usually go to a comparable campground other than the good sams for abt the same or less than the one that takes good sams after the discount. i still look for the good sams parks first.

the discount on fuel once was offered with Loves. Now its Flying J. i have never taken advantage of it. usually to get it, u have to go in first and present ur card then pump. i usually leave out that walk in first part.

you will get lots of opportunities to get insurance. in my case, i did check into the rv insurance and it didn't save me anything. actually i was paying less for insurance than they were claiming i would save. that may be a different story with a motor home.

I haven't regreted joining it and would recommend it.

The Pilot/Flying J discount for Good Sam members requires getting their card. The card works at the pump. After swiping card and entering pin number the price on the pump resets to the discounted amount. Also discounts on propane and use of their dump station. If you stop at a station where there are other stations nearby, their price is the same as others, so the discount is truly a savings.

Even if I never use the Good Sam membership for a campground discount, I've already paid for years of membership savings when I moved my RV and automobile insurance over to Good Sam (GMAC). I'm saving close to $1,000 a year on my combined policies and actually getting better coverage.

And, the discounts (plus free shipping if you order online) at Camping World are great (though as previously stated "dangerous to the wallet").

I'm currently considering going the "Life" membership route now.

It's a good deal but they should rename it Camping World Club as it's become an advertising magazine for Camping World. Every page now promotes the company.

I belong to Passport America, it's a pretty good deal if you do a lot of trips. I also belong to Good Sams and KOA. If you stay more than 3 nights at any of these places it pays for itself. I also get an insurance discount with my Good Sams Membership.
