Low sulfur costs

The cost to remove all of that sulfur from diesel is high due to the extra amount of hydrogen (not free) and the very expensive catalyst that is used in the process. Large compressors to pump the hydrogen, large high pressure reactors and large furnaces to heat the products to reaction temperatures are all part of the increased cost of the low sulfur diesel. Speaking from 39 years of refining experience.

Here in NE Colorado our diesel and reg. unleaded has been high. There are 3 fuel stations in our town and they are more or less waiting to see what the other one does. When one goes down one beats its price by a penny. Diesel is another story. Right now diesel is 2.379 and reg. unleaded is 2.339.
I don't buy in our community unless I have to so I can get to Ft. Morgan, CO where diesel and gas are about 30 to 40 cents cheaper per gal. It has always been this way in our small community of Yuma, CO. I haven't bought fuel or gas in our community for the last 3-5 years. Always try to fill up before going back home.

Here in Gaylord, MI diesel is 2.14 and 87 octane gas is 2.31. That was yesterday. I haven't been out today. Go figure.

Gas vs. Diesel

Here in North Georgia, the price difference between gas and diesel is about 10 - 15 cents a gallon. I bought diesel for 2.16 at a local Kroger on Monday (8-8-16). Along the interstate at the truck stops the difference is even more about 25 cents a gallon.

Truck stops must charge more to get any kind of a return on their investment . A handi-way on a side road might buy his real estate for less than one hundred thousand dollars while a large lot at an Interstate will cost many , many millions . A Flying J just paid 400 million for real estate on I-95 in So. Fl.
I ain't defending them , but I can see that they must get a return on investment to stay in business . I buy mine at mom and pops place !

Gasoline in our part of western Washington (an hour by ferry from Seattle), is higher than diesel by about 20 cents.

Detroit Mi, western suburbs. Depends on the station. Some are nearly equal, others differ by .25 per gallon, then again regular gas varies from 1.99 to 2.49. Love Gas Buddy, can find .30 difference in the same brand gas by looking around.

Headed to Goshen. Difference is about 40 cents. Sucks.

Worse, only diesel is charged higher for credit most places.

I almost ran out in mid Indiana today...........had to get diesel at some small town C-Store. Had to back out. Some nice local spotted for me as I backed into a busy two lane to get out of there. Coulda been bad.

Be sure you are comparing apples to apples.gas with higher ethanol percentage is cheaper but has less power and can damage your engine and other parts of the vehicle .Diesel is not always diesel either, biodiesel blends are cheaper than real diesel.Biodiesel can have organic solids from the cooking oils it was made from, can plug fuel filters.Buy real gas and diesel whenever you can,it is a better product.

Not sure where you live that you can buy gas without ethanol or diesel without biodiesel added. In the midwest there is no choice, all stations have to sell it that way. It would be nice if I had the option to buy diesel without the biodiesel added or the gasoline without the ethanol added. FYI Commercial biodiesel is usually made from soybeans. Cooking oil is usually used by people doing there own home brews of diesel.

In the southwest you will be hard pressed to find any biodiesel at any station or truck stop. Don't buy gas so I don't know about ethanol.

I just bought diesel in Anacortes, WA for $2.51 while gas at the same location was $2.35. A few days ago I paid $2.25 for diesel at a gas stop in Cle Elum.

There are many more Costco gas station that now sell diesel too. A full list is available at Search Results:.

Much less expensive than most local gas station and much easier to negotiate.
