Lou - I hope you work this problem out and get your money returned.

My bank notified me that my card was compromised at Home Depot. Luckily there wasn't a problem but this is the same account that was compromised at Target earlier. From now on I'm using a credit card instead of my bank card (checking/savings). I don't have enough funds to share.

Checks aren't theft proof either. Parents mailed payments at the post office drive-thru and someone broke in and stole the mail. Parent's checks were acid washed and rewritten to someone else for a different amount. The person opened up an account with Fredrick's of Hollywood and ordered a lot of plastic wear. Dad threw a fit each time a catalog would arrive.

+1 on this. Automatic bill pay is one of those things that SOUNDS good at the time, but it's way more trouble than it's worth--for all types of bills, not just CC. If you have a dispute on your electric bill, your cable bill, or your gas bill, and it's set up for ABP, they already have YOUR money by the time you realize anything is wrong. It's much easier to withhold a payment until things are fixed than it is to convince a utility, bank, or any other provider to issue you a refund--and that's IF you can even convince them there is a problem and you deserve one.

No ABP--not us, not here, no way.

Those that have said they never use debit, always credit, that is a solid tip

As I understand it from a person who had an issue with a debit card: if a thief gets your credit card and makes unauthorized purchases, the bank takes the hit and then tracks down and prosecutes the criminal. Fairly simple to understand. But if you use your debit card and a thief gets control of your info, pin, etc, they can wipe out your savings, and it is much much much more difficult to get that money back. The bank will fight hard to recover "their" money, but they are less enthusiastic about recovering "your" money. They will spend a dollar to recover 50 cents if it is their money, lol. So it is always better to use your card as credit. Even if it is a debit card. If you can make a transaction and avoid using your pin, you are better off

This is one reason I do not have any company take automatic payments from my Credit Union account. With my American Express, it alerts me whenever there is a charge without the card present.

Sorry to hear about your troubles and hope you get it straightened out quickly.

I have been hit for fraudulent charges 3 times in the last 4 months. I was alerted to two of them the 3rd I found out when i went to use the card, I was out of town and they would not authorize it , when i called they said they had some other charges and this one looked suspicious so they stopped it, DUH ! .Im actually using the card and the others were not, so they stop me from using it. All worked out. It took a few days but got straightened out.

So:

Noticed the money gone from my checking account on Saturday at 8AM.
Money BACK in my checking account by 3 PM Monday.

Credit card company credited my account for the fraud today.
Situation solved.

Lesson to me was not to use auto bill pay no matter how convenient for credit cards.

Fdw was a member at a gym with auto withdrawal. The gym in town here went outta business. They continued to charge her debt card for months. This was because they had another gym 30 miles away that she could use.
Even though we canceled that bank account it followed to the new account. The bank told us they had no choice but to allow the charges.
Needless to say we had to fire the bank and start over with a new bank.
NEVER AGAIN lesson learned, No auto anything!
