Just looking for some info on bringing a new trailer form the US to Canada. I purchased a 2013 23 IKSS from RVD. I am picking it up in Buffalo and need to bring it accross to Canada. What I am wondering is do I need to contact Customs or the border agency to declare the purchase 72 hours ahead of bringing it accross (like a car). RVD does a paper work package to give to customs with everything you need. I just do not want to get held up becuase I missed a step.
Any help from someone who has done this would be appreciated.
72 hour advance notice is for self propelled vehicles.
Have your papers and drive it to the Canadian border and please do declare it with a smirk when they say if you have anything to declare, that is what I did and got a smile from the border agent.

How are you paying for it ? If you are going to mail or carry a cheque, there are custom procedures you need to follow.

There is some documentation you will need
Ownership of RV. Clearance letter that there is no recalls outstanding. Some other stuff.
If you are buying from a dealer that usually sells to Canadians they should have all the paper work you need. When we bought from RVWholesalers and the customs guys started asking for certain documents we just handed them the whole import package from RVW and the customs dudes found what they needed. They do it every day.
We just had to pay the sales tax at the border.

Ya, it is a breeze.
When we imported ours they didn't even look at the trailer. It could have been packed floor to ceiling and nose to bumper with cages of booze.
But you never know you they are going to check.

Importing is real easy. Just be careful of being ripped off by dealers who charge $395.00 to do the paperwork. All you need is a bill of sale and a letter from the manufacturer stating that there is no recall on the vehicle. You have to let Ottawa know the VIN (to make sure it is not a stolen vehicle) and then bring it across the border. You will have to pay sales tax at the border. Once you let the Dept of Transport in Ottawa know they will send you the necessary documents to take it to a Cdn Tire or one of the several on their list to ensure it meets our standards. Then you can register it at MOT and get your licence plate.
Do your homework first and you will have no problems.
