Is this a good deal?

Hello ~ DH and I are in the "almost ready to sign on the dotted line" stage to take delivery of a 2012 Roo 233S on Wednesday. The List was 19,025 and the final at 14,700. Bases on NADA and other ads in our area, this seems like a great deal but, as always, we want to make the best deal possible. We feel we've negotiated as low as the dealer will go. We are considerating purchasing a very good warranty for 7 years to be sure we won't have any expensive surprises anytime soon. Thoughts appreciated

Sounds like a good deal, but that really can depend on the options and condition of the camper plus the area you live in. Remember that it is technically up to two years old now, with Rockwood changing years around March of the previous year so a 2012 could very well have been made in March of 2011.

I am not a big fan of long warranties like that. Especially at some of the high costs that I've seen for these things. Besides the cost, be aware of limitations such as:

-Where can the service be completed?

-Are repairs limited to the selling dealer and why would another dealer want to do the service?

-Be aware that even the FR warranty is not required to be honored by a non-selling dealer.

-What is covered in the service contract and what is excluded?

-What is the process to reconcile any disagreements?

The bottom line is to read the fine print and ask yourself if you will be stymied if you need it in the future.

One last thought is that your best bet in buying a used trailer is to thoroughly inspect it spending most of your time looking for signs of leaks and water damage.

If you are satisfied with the price then it is a good deal. I would not be taking the 7 year warranty. The high cost is not worth it. Most warranties only cover the appliances and do not cover trailer structure. Many of the appliances are under warranty for two or more years.

also, not a fan of extended 3rd party warranties. many find out that in the small print, many RV issues aren't covered.
most of us pay the $150 for the FR 2nd year factory warranty, since most of the expensive stuff have their own separate warranties.
your dealer will not tell you about the $150 warranty, since they don't get anything commission on it, like they do on the one they're offering you.
but you didn't say if it's a used unit or new.

the price sounds very good, if it's new. that's about what we paid for our new 23SS back in '06.
if it's used, that's not necessarily a good price.

Be sure to ask about the 2nd year Forest River warranty for a $150. Most dealers don't say anything or down play it.

The OP isn't clear but I think it's a used camper, based on the reference to NADA prices...so no 2nd year FR warranty.

Wow ~ you guys are awesome ~ lots of good comments. * it is a used unit * we have gone over it from rooftop inspection to checking the flooring, looking for discolorations, checking the canvas, so far as to go during a windy rainstorm to see if we could spot any defects ~ none I think the main reason we are leaning to the longer term warranty is our past experiences with refrigerators, slide outs, a/c units and the like. The warranty would be addressed at a number of local dealerships. We are in a good size area so no issues there. It's an "as is" with no warranties transferring that I am aware of....

Upon further discussion with DH, the warranty basically covers anything mechanical such as appliances, slide out mechanism, awning operation (not canopy) as far as the trailer itself - leaks and the like- would go under our regular insurance policy. For the small difference in our monthly payment, it's a cost I am comfortable with. If I were buying new and had a warranty to begin with I think we would be more inclined to go without the extended warranty. It's a peace of mind issue
