In part you're doing better than I. With my crew cab/long bed/3500 DRW with 4.10 gears - I have gotten between 8.5 - 11.0 mpg towing. My towing speed is typically 62-64 mph on highways.
Unloaded, around town and highway miles mixed it, I'm usually getting between 10 and 14.9 mpg. My non-towing speed is typically 7-9mph over the posted speed limit on highways and 3-5mph over the posted speed limit on secondary roads.
Towing-wise: I generally pull on highways up and down the east coast. My fifth wheel weighs right about 14,000 pounds. The truck, fully loaded (including pin weight) comes in right about 11,500-12,000 depending on who is with us and what the trip consists of.
I'll be honest, I had hoped for better mileage too.

me too.. the only time I command it (push button down) to drop out of 6th is when my temps (EGT) get out of my comfort level, I sit at 17-1800 rpm at 63-65MPH towing with a combined weight of 20k give or take. I also see 12.5 towing mixed and 22 empty

I have a 07 2500 Duramax crew cab 4 x 4 and have averages 9.8 to 11 at highway speeds. My 5er unloaded weight is 12,000 not sure how much cargo I have but the cargo bays are full I would guess another 1000 to 1500 pounds. I drive with cruise set between 65 and 75 depending on posted speed limit and have never wished I had a gaser. I can even pass a slower car running 50 with very little effort raising my speed to 70 to 80 during the pass, try that with your gaser.

After reading through this highly informative (and mildly entertaining) thread about MPG and the virtues of this and that...
I've had a change of heart.
I'm going to go all out and go for the ultimate in fuel economy.
(you know, I'm kidding, right?)

I done some clean-up on this thread as it was headed off the rails. Please remember our #1 rule: play nice.
In effort to get back on topic, here's the original post...

Thanks Dave.
Millertime, I checked my '13 manual and it doesn't mention the 4.10 at all. If I recall right, it gave the truck a towing capability of around 26k, up from 23,500 for the 3.73. Wish I would have held into my '11 manual.
