Newbie to RV World - am I paying too much?

Looking at a 5th Wheel 2012 Flagstaff Classic Super Lite 8528BHSS fully loaded ... dealer is asking $28K including the hitch and brake controller for my Sierra 2500HD. How competitive is this?

Hello, and to the forums. Hope you enjoy the stay, and learn a lot, and can teach others what you already know.

While I can't directly answer your question on price, too many things come in to play. First one is, what state you are in. Might try looking at NADA or Kelly Blue Book, and see if they lest prices.Might also check some dealers on line and see what they have one for.

I would do a search for that 5er country wide and ask for quotes, the sales people will be glad to help. When I was looking that is what I did and it provided information that was useful when you start to dicker on price for the 5er that you choose. Some people get quotes from national discount dealers and try to us them to help with price negotiations. Good Luck, I looked for 17 months and even after I found a 5er that would do for me, I still took 3 months to ink the deal.

As far as price, 30 to 35% off the MSRP is normal.

Thanks for the quick replies! The MSRP was $39K - I'm in Canada. Based on the 30-35% (I've heard that elsewhere as well), I still may have a bit of wiggle room. Of course, they are likely motivated to clear as much inventory as possible before winter sets in.

Good advice. Once we decided on what we wanted, including the options and hitch, I e-mailed 5-6 dealers within a 2 day drive to ask for a quote. There was a $7,000 range in pricing. We then followed up with several dealers and ended up buying from RV Wholesalers.

From my experience, and it could have changed...

That's in the US, but in Canada

and Canadian MSRP is usually US$ MSRP plus 10% at least.

And then Canadians pay an extra 14% for taxes, in most areas.

That's why I've purchased 2 campers in the US and imported into Canada. The only extra cost to import is the $195 fee to the Registar of Import Vehicles.

Got 5 quotes in 2010...RVW, RV Direct and 3 dealers in MI. All quotes were within $1400. Went with RV Direct and picked up in Elkhart, IN. The discount was 36% off MSRP.

I heard that you also need to take the unit to Canadian Tire for an inspection within 45 days. Presume you then get your CSA sticker. What does Canadian Tire generally charge for that?

Import costs at Canadian Tire

Canadian Tire is paid by the Gov. They charge you nothing and send the paper work in and give you a copy. Total time is ten minutes and this is the only thing that is required to import trailer into Canada other than your taxes of course, however you pay no taxes in the US. Just imported trailer into Canada and would not hesitate to do again.

As said, the CTC inspection is part of the $195 fee paid to RIV at the border. When they fill out the RIV paperwork at the border, you'll have a registration number that you enter on RIV's site after a couple of days. You can then print the inspection form and set it up with CTC. I had my camper registered and plated in 7 days. That was the procedure in 2010, it may have changed.

As far as CSA certification, most dealers list it as an option for about $400. I've asked what that $400 option gets you...no one is willing to answer. All components in the camper are UL/CSA approved...have been for years. I've waived the CSA option both times and not have an issue at the border, at CTC, anywhere. I'm convinced that it's a $400 grab as the campers both sides of the border are identical, but that's just my opinion.

February 2012, V-Cross 275, with 50 amp and second AC, table and chairs and a few other options had a MSRP of $43,100 and I got it for $28,000, very close to the 35%. In texas
