NOT getting ripped off when trading...

We're looking to trade in our 2016 lacrosse 329 BHT for a prime time crusader 380 mbh.

Any tips to avoid getting taken advantage of by the dealer?

Thanks!

Sell it outright. You'll take a hit one way or another trading in. If you have a desirable unit that sells fast and is hard to keep in stock, the dealer may do a little better, but not near what you can do your own.

If you really want to avoid being ripped off by the dealer, don't trade it in.
You'll always do better selling it yourself.

Sold my Class A in three days on Craig's list for 6K more then CW said it was worth. If you can do it sell on your own instead of trading JMHO

I really can not see owning two campers at the same time when we bought our Cedar Creek from a local dealer. So I traded our old Cougar into the dealer and let the Cougar sit on his lot for him to sell. This took six month for the Cougar to sell and it was in excellent shape. Even the dealer comment on how will I maintained the trailer at trade in.

I would look up the NADA book valve for your unit and see what value is for a fair condition trailer. This is what the dealer may use to give you a price for trade in. It is your decision whether to take the offer or not. If you do not like the offer than don't take the trade in and sell the unit out right. But remember you will need to advertise (takes $$) and keep insurance on the unit as it deprecates over time.

A class A motor home sat on a driveway for sale in my son's subdivision waiting for someone to buy the unit between three and four years before it was sold. I did not want that.

Good luck.

Negotiate a cash deal with no trade in. Once you have the price, ask what they will give you for your trade in. Don't be surprised at the low price.
In many states you only pay sales tax on the purchase price after deducting the trade in, so there is an advantage to trading.

I simply told the dealer what we would do and they laughed. I told them call me if you change your mind. Took them a mo but they called. I am sure if their sales had not slacked off a bit they'd never called. Not the same outfit but 2015 for 2015.

As Epat said , you only pay sales tax on the trade difference , this can work in your favor many times on a trade . At 7 per cent this will be a $2,100 on a thirty thousand dollar difference .
Remember that the dealer has to make a profit on each sale, new or used .

Here in Ontario, Canada, we pay 13% sales tax (combined provincial and federal sales taxes, aka HST). With the hit you'll take on a trade in, its better to sell it yourself. That's what we did last time. The tax savings on a trade would have been only 1/3 of the savings I got by selling the Roo privately. Don't be in a rush. It's worth it financially.

Check with your state DMV before you let a dealer play the "trade-in tax" line. I've never seen it publicized but here in DE you can get your purchase tax money back when you sell a vehicle yourself. DMV has all the forms. You have to send them your bill of sale within 30 days of the sale.

No matter how you look at it plan to take a beating. NADA values are worthless and you won't see anything close to that. The dealer could have sold this to you new for at least 30% off the "list" price. If you paid more than that you started out in the hole. You will be looking at around 50% off the "list" on a trade.

Same here. I have the form sent in already since I sold mine before buying, and have already called. I will be getting a refund equal to same $$ I would have gotten had I traded it in, except I sold it for $4,000 more than they offered for trade in.

6 of one, half dozen of the other.

I sold my old TT on Craigslist. It was 3 yrs old and in good shape. I included my WDH and a starter pack of stuff ie Lynx levelers, sewer hose etc and sold the TT as ready to camp. I got $3k more than best dealer offer and $3k less than paid new out the door tax, tags and title. I owed on my loan still. I was upfront with the buyer. They knew they would not get the title until after I used the money they paid to pay off the loan. We did an electronic transaction at their bank to have them pay my lien holder directly. Their bank gave me a cashiers check for the remainder of the money. They took the tt that day and agreed to meet up again when the title came in. Big went very smoothly. It took about a month to sell on Craigslist. We then took that money as a down payment on the new fiver. It's your best way to get the most out of your lacrosse.

We were told by one salesman that you should be able to purchase new for about 70% of MSRP plus tax and plates. Our 2017 Sunseeker cost us pretty close to that figure. We we were also told that you will be lucky if you can get 50% of the NADA retail price for a trade-in. Mainly because it may take the dealer a year or better to sell the used RV

I had a pretty decent offer on my old TT. It was 2k more than the dealership offered, however in my state you only pay tax on the trade difference so I traded it. Was 6s and easier.

lost almost 50% on my trailer when I traded it in with extras. Used it twice. One week each.

We traded. They gave us more than the value and they came way down on the sale price of the new one.

CW gave me 10% less than I paid for the TT 1 year after purchased new. The new 5er was discounted 27% from MSRP (a fictional number IMO).

When we bought our new-to-us Rockwood this spring the dealer was reluctant to take our trailer in due to the fact that it didn't have a slide. They offered us $5k; we turned it down.

I put the trailer on Kijiji for $10,400 and sold it four days later for $9,500.

You get lambasted on a trade in, which is why we don't do them anymore. The cost is a small risk, a little less certainty and a delayed payback. But the payback is worth it.
