Surprisingly NY does not have a personal property tax. I know Virginia has a particularly onerous personal property tax but it is by county so parking your rig in a non-tax county gets around the tax, or so I'm told. I've got a feeling that there will be a closing of that loop hole in the not too distant future.

The states and feds are gonna get you one way or the other. Here in NY it will be getting a lot worse before it gets better, if it ever gets better.

Oh, and for all those who think they own their house during or even after the mortgage is satisfied, I hate to say we are all mistaken. Most states will auction your real estate off for non pay't of real eastate taxes to the highest bidder, when you become delinquent three sucessive years. So, look at it this way, your real estate taxes are merely rent in a way to live in your house, paid to the taxing authority in your particular state. Yes, you will receive the net proceeds of the sale after taxes, penalties, and interest are paid. Pleasant thought isn't it!

Kentucky has personal property taxes on vehicles and boats but does exclude most retirement income from state income taxes.

You got it easier in Western NY, here in the Hudson Valley our registrations are higher because we have to pay for the Metro North Rail line. Any county that has a Metro North Rail line in it gets an additional fee in thier yearly vehicle registration. Does not matter if you you the rail line or not....

I don't know about state Dwayne, but I do know Alabama is VERY Military friendly. Active duty has all sorts of perks - as do retired military and federal/DOD civil servants.

Shoot, we can accommodate any Yankee who has served - brothers and sisters in ares as it were -

...besides, the War of Northern Aggression was 150 years ago and most of us have forgotten/forgiven - but just to be on the safe side, if ya'll come down try and stick to the more meteropolitan areas - even us big-city folks refer to the 'country' as 'bubba-land'

That is true but I know of no County in Virginia where they do not have County tax. If you live in a town or city, you pay them and County tax, if you keep it in the County and not in a city or Town you only pay County tax. Can not beat Virginia for disabled veterans. I do not pay property tax on the first Ac. or house but I do have to pay personal Property tax on cars,Rv's and boat. That was voted in by the state 4 years ago. But I do not have to renew my rv lic. and truck. You get 1 vehicle through the disabled Veterans exemption and permanent plates for trailers and RV's. For anyone and everyone.....

CT passes the PPT bills down to the local towns to collect. We get nicked in July every year for ALL vehicles owned including a damn backhoe in the yard. Each year as the vehicles age, we are supposed to pay less PPT but who ever calculates what we pay must be on drugs....real good ones.

Lived in Virginia 30+ years there are no counties or cities that I know of & lived in several that do not charge a personal property tax. Some have a lot higher tax rate than others........ Some autos & small trucks get a break on the rates but RVs, Campers, one ton trucks (actually anything over 7500 GVW) get no break.

Do get to have a permanent tag on the fiver so its a one time charge but personal property taxes are annually most counties are due Dec 5 some of the cities have different schedules & some let you break it into two payments....
Towns charge the county rate plus a town rate.......

Virginia is the only state that I know of that Cities are totally independent and are not in or part of a county. Towns are part of counties though.

Just paid our personal property taxes.......
