Personal Property Tax

Here in Missouri as if we were not taxed enough each december we get a nice bill from the state informaing us we need to pay a "Tax" on our stuff that has been registered with the state. Boats, Boat Trailers, Outboard Motors, Cars, and yes RV's. This year was the first year with the camper and WOW what a shock. Any other states do this sort of thing?

I have really come to hate December.

I feel your pain Ryand. I really wish MO would change the due date of taxes to June. The December property tax bill is a real bummer when people are trying to purchase Christmas gifts for family and friends.

My wife and I have lived in our house for 34 years and now own it. That means along with the Personal Property tax we also get the Real Estate Tax bill too. We get the double whammy in December.

We don't have it here in MD, but I've heard of other states with it (of course, I can't pull specifics just vaguely, "I kind of remember reading about that and think, man- that's gotta hurt").

However, for the other participants in this thread - let's be mindful to keep this RV'ing related per the community rules.

Arkansas had a personal property tax when I lived there.

I miss it dearly - it wasn't that big, and that combined with my $500 a year property tax was a drop in the bucket compared to NY property tax.

Depends on which city/town you live in, but $35-40 per thousand $ of assesed value is pretty common. So a house worth $150,000 would have an annual tax bill of $5,000 - $6,000 a year. And the politicians wonder why people keep leaving...

Arkansas has state income tax, sales tax(of course), real estate tax and personal property tax. Kinda bad.

Positive note: LIFETIME(perm.) tags for 5er was $25. Not 100 per year. When I lived in Texas it was $70 a year for a 16ft boat. I have 3 trailers, jet ski, bass boat and 2 cars... It would break me buying tags for all them annually.
My PPT is less than $500, real estate tax $850 and our little town has an exemption for state taxes (4%) in the city limits.

Yes, Mass. calls it the Excise Tax (as if sales tax wasn't enough, plus annual registration fees, I also I get to pay for the privilege of parking in my own driveway...that I pay property tax on). The bills are sent out each January.

Buying a new truck and camper in the same year resulted in almost a $1K bill.

Did I read that correctly - you have to pay to park in your own driveway?

I guess most of us homeowners pay for parking in their own driveway indirectly by paying property taxes, but do you get a separate tax bill for this?
