Portable Freezer/fridge AC/DC
Anyone using a portable freezer/refrigerator such as Engel, Edgestar, or Whynter? Currently looking at an 85qt Whynter model that claims to hold temps from -8 to 50F. We need more freezer space when camping for a week or so. Thought of adding a small upright in place of the washer/dryer, but that is in the master closet, and didn't want it kicking on in the middle of the night.

Put it on the back bumper and share with others.

I installed this unit over a year ago and we love it.... We went on a 31 day trip last summer and cooked tons of meals in advance, froze them and they stayed frozen the entire trip.... I set temp at abt 20 degrees and it stayed there the entire time.... Love how it switches from AC to DC automatically...

My Engel is in in the front storage compartment of our Cedar Creek 34RLSA. Fed by 12V. Don't bother with 120v. Truck charges battery when moving, converter when plugged in. very pleased.

Ernest, that looks like the Whynter model I'm looking at.

Do either of you mostly use yours as freezer, or also as a fridge? I'm really loving this idea.

Mine is an Edgestar 83qt.... On extended trips, we use it as a freezer (we like our root beer floats so we take our ice cream and like it frozen)...
On week end trips we use it for watermelons, canned drinks, etc...
It's been a roaring success for us ... As you can see, I built a slide and put it in one of my basement compartments....

I think the Edgestar and Whynter are one in the same. Found a decent deal on the 85qt and ordered it. Thanks for the input!

Used the Whynter 85qt portable freezer/fridge this past week and I'm completely satisfied with it! Used it mostly as an extra fridge for food and held a temp of 32-33 all week. Was camping and cooking for 12 people all week and had it packed with meat, that was previously frozen, and other food items. By the end of the week, the meat was still somewhat frozen in the middle. Have no doubt it would have been frozen solid if I had lowered the temp. I see this a very useful appliance in the future. Best price I found was $569.00 at Home Depot with free shipping to store. This also fits quite nicely in our front bedroom closet and is virtually inaudible. I plugged into my inverter for the trip home, (it is AC/DC, but I don't have a DC hookup yet) and it did great. Pulls just 1.0 amp AC. Hopefully it will hold up for the long run.
