We have used our 5er in place of a hotel room a few times but mainly have it to enjoy the outdoors so cost is just part of it. Recently we spent a week at the Houston Livestock Show with our kids showing. We carried the camper and spent about 1 nights hotel cost for a full hook up site for 1 week. Defiantly prefer sleeping in my own bed with closets and cabinets over suit cases. I also have the TV for other needs so I do not count the cost of owning it in our expenses only extra gas that we use towing FW. The wife and I joke about the fact that camping is supposed to be a cheap vacation every time we shop for a trip.

The point of all that is the cost IMHO has a lot to do with the people. How far you travel and how long you stay. With 3 kids and relativley short trips, 200-300 miles, and hotels being 200-300+ per night by the time you get two rooms or a suite, the RV is the better option for us.

In the words of my Granny, it is all about "Making Memories". I just hope my children have some fond memories like I do from camping every summer with my grandparents.

State parks are getting expen$ive! In my state, the "summer" rates are $45 for full hookup on weekends in "premium" sites, and $35 for full hookup in "non-premium" sites. YIKES!

Thing about Camping compared to Hotel:
1-you know who's been sleeping in your bed.
2- you save by cooking your meals which can be expensive in restaurants .
3- you can have your pets along.

We like getting into our own bed and already being unpacked and organized when we get were we're going. But we're nearly full timers anyway.
