surge protector
I am in the market for a surge protector. I have been on the road for a year full time and haven't had a problem without one but I have read some bad things that has happened to fellow RV'rs that scared me into finally getting one. I am sure that there are tons of old threads on this but I wanted to start a new one to see what is on the new market and cost efficient. I noticed that some are suggesting progressive industries but that is 260.00. I'm hoping not to spend so much. I have a 30 amp 33 foot forest river wildcat. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Make sure you get the xtra warranty on the surgeguard, mine failed twice in the first year.

Look around and compare. The progressive isn't cheap. Ask me how I know. I bought 2. One 30A that I installed initially, and another 50A now since my trailer is getting converted to 50A. I found the 30A for $240 to the door. The 50A cost a bit more. That said there are charts out there that compare the progressive to the others. More protection, American made AND American supported. Only choice for me.

How much is your TT worth? $240 to protect all the electronics seems cheap to me. Only ONE choice IMO. Progressive...Lifetime warranty..great customer service. Only decision is portable or hardwired....

Not all of the progressives are 240.00. I am seeing some for 85.00 but they dont have lifetime warranties. Progressive seems to be the one to go with for some reason. But my questions is, does anyone have any leads on a cost efficient one that is good quality with a lifetime warranty?

IMO if you are going to spend any money you should buy the EMS. The "surge protector" is just that...a surge protector. The EMS protects you from almost everything. The portable is EMS-PT30C and the hardwire is EMS-HW30C. I have the portable only because where I would have to mount it is hard to access when you can't get on your knees. Google them or Froogle them for the best price. It's money well spent.

Ditto, Have a 50 AMP Progressive on my 5er and a 30 Amp Portable for the TT. Money well spent.

+1 on this. We purchased our first camper last summer and the very first mod I did was to install a hardwired Progressive Industries 30amp EMS. You are correct - they are not cheap, but neither is the cost of replacing damaged electronics in the camper. Or worse - planning that awesome family vacation, towing your rig 8 hours away only to smoke it when you plug into a mis-wired power pole at camp. Vacation over.

Get the 50amp right off the bat if you EVER think you may get another unit. That way you save the money of trying to sell 30amp when you no longer need it.

this tells you all you need to know. Spend the money for the Progressive EMS series unit with lifetime warranty. No other brand has it. No other brand compares

OK. I understand progressive is what I will go with. However, my question is. I will be getting the permanent surge protector. There are so many progressives to choose from ranging from 75.00 to very expensive. I am trying to find the best progressive protector for my dollar that offers the lifetime guarantee. I started this thread and learned that Progressive is what I need to go with. Now I am asking for help in choosing one. Thank you all for your help. Very much appreciated.

the cheaper basic ones are surge protection ONLY. If you want full protection, get one of the EMS series that covers from anything that could be encountered. I will never be without one.

the install instructions are very good. Just need to access the cord anywhere between where you connect to RV and the breaker box.

You want something with high and low voltage protection.

I went with the expensive EMS Progressive one also after reading all of the reviews it was a no brainer. I installed mine right behind the main breaker box, just pulled it out mounted it to the breaker box itself and connected all of the wires right there. Super easy, didnt even have to add any wire just used the wires that was there since they where long and just cut into them and added in the EMS. I did the same thing for a friend of mine on his 5er, mounted it the same way.

x2 on the ems hw and mounting right to the power center box. Drilled a hole in the cabinet right there for the remote display.
